Disappointing News for Sex Education Fans as Emma Mackey Reportedly Frontrunner for Lois Lane Role in Superman: Legacy

British star Emma Mackey became hugely popular for her role in the British comedy drama Sex Education. The series that related to many young adults across the globe, saw Mackey being nominated for a British Television award in 2021 and a National Comedy award in 2022. Over 3 seasons and a 4th on the way, the 27 year old star has been an integral part of the show but has indicated that she would not be returning for a 5th season.

Mackey’s imminent departure from Sex Education may also be due to a high profile gig that the actor is competing for along with other talented actors. According to latest reports from the DC camp, James Gunn is well underway with casting for his next big venture Superman: Legacy and Mackey is one of the frontrunners for the role of Lois Lane.

Could Emma Mackey Be James Gunn’s Lois Lane?

Despite announcing her departure from Sex Education after Season 4, Emma Mackey’s future prospects are looking extremely bright. The star was among the list of probable actors who were auditioned by DC head James Gunn for his ambitious film Superman: Legacy. Gunn, who is writing and directing the feature, reportedly held screen tests during the weekend of 17th June and combined sets of actors to audition for Superman and Lois Lane. Emma Mackey and David Corenswet who were paired together, were given several lines from the script to enact along with looking the part of the characters.

While the result of these auditions are yet to be revealed, there are speculations that Emma Mackey may have impressed James Gunn as she was the only female actor to be recalled on the second day to play Lois Lane along with the three male probables, Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet, and Tom Brittney. While  this doesn’t confirm that Mackey is officially up for the role, it remains to be seen if her call back will work favorably for the talented star.

Fans Disappointed At Emma Mackey’s Departure From Sex Education

Emma Mackey became a big star after her stint in the hit British comedy drama Sex Education. Her rebellious teen character of Maeve touched a chord with many young adults worldwide who showered her with a lot of love and appreciation. But Mackey shocked her fan base by dropping a bombshell on her future involvement with the show. When asked if she would return for Season 5, the star said,

“Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week! No I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”

Following her announcement, fans took to social media to express their sadness on not being able to see Mackey in the show anymore. Some hardcore enthusiasts even demanded that the show be called off without her. Now, with the young star’s possible entry into the DC franchise, the glimmer of hope that she may change her mind about Sex Education, has become fainter.
