The Princess Diaries franchise was widely praised for its lighthearted and charming storytelling. Released in the early 2000s, The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement managed to become a comfort movie for many viewers. Both the movies, featuring Anne Hathaway, were loosely based on Meg Cabot’s novels of the same name.
The franchise narrates the story of Mia Thermopolis, a young American teenager who discovers that she is the heir to the throne of a European kingdom. The die-hard fans of the franchise have been waiting for a new film for roughly 20 years and now, finally, their prayers have been heard. The third film in the franchise has been announced and Chris Pine has talked about reprising his role as Lord Nicholas Devereaux in the next movie.
Chris Pine wants to return to The Princess Diaries franchise
Actor Chris Pine got significant fame after he starred as Lord Nicholas Devereaux in 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. The actor is now ready to reprise his role in the upcoming third film in the franchise. Pine was asked by Entertainment Tonight if he would like to return to the franchise, and the actor replied,
“Yeah. I’m here. I’m here for it. Give me a phone call or an e-mail.”
Pine’s character was initially Mia Thermopolis’ rival but eventually became a love interest. The upcoming film will be a continuation rather than a reboot.
Anne Hathaway is excited to star in the film
In November 2022, Disney confirmed that there will be a third movie in the franchise, and the star of the franchise, actress Anne Hathaway is quite excited about it,
“I would more than entertain it. I’m pulling for it. If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”
Julie Andrews played the role of Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Mia’s grandmother and Queen of Genovia. But the main question is, will Julie Andrews return?

Julie Andrews is unsure about her return
Andrews, who is 87 now, is not very sure if she will return to the franchise after so many years. In an interview with Access Hollywood, she said,
“I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible. It was talked about very shortly after two came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run. In terms of us doing it, I doubt that now.”
The first two movies blend elements of comedy, romance, and coming-of-age themes. It catered to all sorts of viewers and became a fan-favorite franchise.
