Marvel’s Spider-Man had a panel at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday, and it’s all people can talk about, at least until the next big gaming panel, which just so happens to be Mortal Kombat 1 today. Insomniac Games decided to really spoil the adoring fans who were sitting there, with a new limited edition console announced, available to purchase from next Friday, a new story trailer highlighting all sorts of useful information for the eagle-eyed, and a panel including the cast, but more so, Tony Todd, the voice actor for Venom!

As was shown in the original extended gameplay trailer at the PlayStation Showcase, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 isn’t going to struggle for villains, with no less than nine characters of various law-breaking limits spotted in a blink-and-you’ll-miss it moment, and that’s just the ones we know about! Well, thanks to the latest trailer shown last night, we know more about Venom, although still not who the host is, not categorically anyway, and we had the surprising appearance of a villain no-one expected to be involved… Martin Li, otherwise known as Mr. Negative!

The antagonist of the first two thirds of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Martin Li was the terrorist Mr. Negative, who used his powers to control those around him, drawing the negative emotions from within them and wreaking havoc, causing mid-air helicopter crashes, the near-release of a terrifying virus and ultimately being responsible for the death of Jefferson Davis, Miles’ father.

It’s that last point that’ll be worth remembering, as the trailer shows a longer-haired, older Miles talking to Martin Li, and it was said afterwards that their interactions will mostly centre around the damage caused by Li and the resulting death of Jefferson Davis. Maybe this is all to get closure for Miles and for him to move on, or perhaps he’ll have more of a part to play in the sequel than any of us expected?

The longer hair and shaggy beard of Li certainly suggests a total lack of care for himself, perhaps pointing towards a remorseful side that wasn’t present in the first game, and maybe it was he who asked to meet Miles and potentially repent for his actions? Or maybe it’s all a trap, as Li/Mr. Negative proved in the first game, he’s not above plotting and moving pieces into place and being patient for years if it means getting revenge.

We don’t have much longer to wait until Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releases, and with it we’ll all get our answer. What do you think of the unexpected appearance of Martin Li? Are you as excited as we are to get your hands on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2? Let us know in the comments!
