Many believe Shanks chose to take this path of action because he had an insight into what Luffy was going to become in the coming years.
It is also believed by the fans that the red-haired pirate intentionally let Luffy eat the Gomu Gomu no Mi devil fruit because he knew about the truth of the devil fruit, helping shape the One Piece series as we know it today.
