Stephen Colbert has interviewed numerous guests over the years, and it appears Donald Trump is his least favorite. The chat show host had interviewed the then-presidential candidate Trump on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Colbert described the interview as disappointing due to the ‘reasonable man’ persona that the former President of the United States puts on for the camera.
While Colbert’s statement was agreed upon by many, others found the interview pretty interesting and thought it created a buzz during the election time. Colbert affirmed that he would not invite Trump back for another interview on the show.
Stephen Colbert’s Worst Guest Is Donald Trump And Here’s Why
Stephen Colbert appeared on a virtual episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and discussed his talk show and the guests he interviewed. One question directed at Colbert was about the one guest that he would like to interview. Colbert thought about it for a few minutes before answering ‘Jesus’. Andy Cohen felt that Colbert was close to Jesus already and suggested whether he would like to interview Donald Trump.
Colbert was not so keen on the idea and shared that he had already interviewed Trump back in 2015. He explained in detail that the interview was disappointing due to the Republican leader switching characters on-screen and off-screen. According to Colbert, Trump played the ‘reasonable man’ persona which didn’t sit well with the host. Colbert shared with Andy Cohen:
“I did once, I wouldn’t want to anymore. I did once and he was actually kind of… um… disappointing because he played the ‘reasonable man,’ you know what I mean? He’s always kind of in persona mode and sometimes he plays like the rallying populist and sometimes he plays reasonable man.”
Stephen Colbert further explained that when he met Trump backstage, he was a very ordinary man, the one you would meet at a country club. However, when he appeared in front of the camera, he was very reserved and played it safe on the show. Colbert shared that Trump even didn’t make eye contact. He told Cohen:
“There’s nothing particularly remarkable about him, but then he puts on a persona for a camera and the persona he gave me when he was on the show the first time was actually very quiet and very reserved, like he played it very safe. He wouldn’t even make eye contact for most of it.”
While Colbert shared strong feelings about the 45th President, his viewers had divided opinions about the revelation. Colbert’s interview with Trump made a significant buzz during the 2015 elections.
Viewers Found The Interview Amusing Despite Mixed Feelings For Donald Trump
When Stephen Colbert interviewed Donald Trump in 2015, he apologized for all the mean things he said about Trump. Colbert jokingly asked Trump whether he would like to apologize to anyone, to which he replied, “Ah… no.” They further discussed different topics, including some political decisions like the Mexico wall.
Looking back, the interview was pretty amusing, considering the fact that such an interview wouldn’t happen in today’s political circumstances. Supporters of the former President commented that The Late Show ratings were higher due to Trump’s appearance. Even the viewers who didn’t agree with Trump’s political position were intrigued by the interview. Their comments varied from “strange to watch” to “civilized, respectful, and surprisingly rational”.
Despite the mixed reactions, Colbert stayed true to his word and has not had Donald Trump on his show since then.
