Meryl Streep, one of the most celebrated actresses of all time, delivered a searing indictment of then-President Donald Trump in her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes. Streep, who was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in 2017, criticized Trump’s lack of empathy.
Trump denied what Streep had said and targeted the actress saying that she is one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood. The war of words that ensued between the two personalities shed light on the intersection of celebrity and politics, raising questions about the responsibilities and consequences that come with such influential positions.
What Meryl Streep Said and How Donald Trump Responded?
The Oscar winner, who received the Golden Globes Cecil B DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, used her speech to decry Trump’s “instinct to humiliate.” In her acceptance speech, she utilized her platform to criticize the former POTUS Donald Trump without naming him directly.
“It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back,” Streep said. (Via Variety)
“It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.”
Donald Trump responded to Streep’s criticism on Twitter, calling her “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood” and a “Hillary flunky.”
In a series of tweets, Donald Trump criticized Meryl Streep, the three-time Academy Award-winning actor.
“She is a Hillary flunky who lost big,” Trump said.
“For the 100th time, I never ‘mocked’ a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him “groveling” when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad.” Trump tweeted.
“Just more very dishonest media!”
Streep has more Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations than any actor in history.

Once He Praised The Iron Lady Actress
In an August 2015 interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Donald Trump was asked about which actresses he loved. He had nothing but some nice words to say about Meryl Streep. He said:
“Julia Roberts is terrific, and many others. Meryl Streep is excellent; she’s a fine person, too,” Trump told THR.
“The problem is I’ll name three or four or five and then the hundred that I know will be insulted, and I don’t mean to insult them.”
So, it can be guessed that before targeting the famed actress in 2017, Trump was an admirer of her.
