The Game Awards is most certainly the greatest stage when it comes to gaming. The awards are also famously dubbed as the equivalent of the Academy Awards or Oscars for the Gaming Industry. The awards are all set to honor 2023’s greatest games and the people behind them in a ceremony on December 7.
The founder of The Game Awards is Geoff Keighley, one of the most well-known and respected individuals in the gaming industry. Recently, in a Q&A stream that was broadcasted on the steaming platform Twitch, Keighley talked about the awards’ World Premier Branding and more.
What Is The Game Awards ‘World Premiere’ Branding? Why Is It Removed?
The Game Awards, as stated earlier represent the highest order of laurels in the video game industry, and were founded by Games Journalist Geoff Keighley. There are many things that one associates with the ceremony. From dazzling trailers and reveals to iconic performances by many of the upcoming game’s team members. All in all, it is an experience to be beheld by every gamer.
One of the most popular elements in the ceremony is the TGA’s ‘World Premiere’ announcements. These are essentially game reveals and trailers exclusive to the Game Awards. Now, in the Q&A from The Game Awards’ found, Geoff Keighley has stated that the ‘World Premiere’ tag is now gone for good. This year some changes have been made to the Award’s format and its intricacies.
Confirming the removal of World Premiere labeling, Geoff had this to say on the matter:
Actually, you’ll see this year, we often put up those cards, ‘world premiere, world premiere’… we’re kind of moving away from that, just because everything’s kind of, ‘is it a first look? Is it an announcement?’ etc,
So Geoff Keighley concluded this by saying that the awards would culminate all of the announcements, and reveals for the games into one. This is good news, in a way, as it disambiguates a lot of the content that will be displayed to thousands of viewers.
Other Questions Answered and Revelations Made by Geoff Keighley About The Game Awards 2023 Ceremony
Apart from the discontinuation of World Premiere some other announcements about changes in the Game Awards 2023 ceremony were confirmed by Geoff Keighley. For example: The Player’s Choice Award which is solely determined by players will not be sharing the percentage of votes for all of the nominations. Security arrangements for the ceremony are also going to be kicked up a notch in light of recent stage intrusions that took place last year. It is worth noting that a stage intrusion also happened in August during Gamescom 2023 which was hosted by Geoff Keighley.
Unfortunately, there have been no changes in the number of categories for the year 2023. Keighley mentioned that there was discussion amongst gamers online regarding the addition of categories like a category solely for expansions and one for remakes. But there won’t be any new ones added this year.
Keighley also revealed that there are no plans regarding E3’s revival. The founder also mentioned that although a few years have passed since a physical E3 has been organized, there are still no plans for one happening any time soon. He also stated that his efforts and focus are totally on the Game Awards, Summer Gamefest, and Gamescom Opening.
He also talked about Dave the Diver being nominated for the best indie game and stated that the decision regarding nominations is always in the hands of the jury. It was reiterated by him that there is no one else apart from the 120 media outlets worldwide who get to decide the nominations.
Coming to Keighley’s companion when it comes to co-hosting, it was confirmed that Sydnee Goodman will be returning as co-host of the event. Apart from all this, Keighley also shared his thought process behind the show and its layout. From figuring out the logistics around the presentation to choosing musical guests and performance. The amount of experimentation which are conducted by the team behind the scenes was shared by Geoff Keighley.
