Elden Ring puts forth a lot of mysteries for players to deduce in FromSoftware’s typical cryptic storytelling fashion, and the colossal Fire Giant, who has an eye in his torso for some reason, is one of these mysteries. The Surtr-inspired boss is apparently the last of the giants after the war against them, but beyond this, their lineage isn’t expanded on much.
However, the game also hints at a far more ancient and somehow even larger breed of giants, with their remnants scattered chillingly across the Mountaintops of the Giants. The lore doesn’t explain how they ended up there, and we’ll likely never get to fight them, even in Shadow of the Erdtree.
The Giants Were Of Unbelievably Massive Stature
A player in the r/Eldenring subreddit recently posted an image of one of these decaying giants, which was so enormous that only its skull could be visible in the image. The user wondered about the possibility of a boss fight with an enemy this huge, stating that it’d be “sick.”
A commenter provided a size comparison between the different giants in the game, and the skull of the unearthed giant alone is over twice the size of the Fire Giant’s entire body. Boss fights would be at an overwhelmingly huge scale. Think Kratos against Cronos in God of War 3, but 6 times bigger.
Not that boss fights with these colossal beings are even possible, considering how…dead they are. The demise of the Fire Giant is the final nail in the coffin for the possibility of Elden Ring players, as it’s very unlikely there’d be others wandering The Lands Between. However, that hasn’t stopped some from scraping together as much information about them as they can.
The Mountaintop Skeletons Were Elden Ring‘s Largest Species
YouTuber Zullie the Witch, who is renowned for digging deep into FromSoftware lore to find answers to unanswered questions, has heavily analyzed these colossal skeletons in one of his videos. By comparing them to scaled-up regular skeletons and factoring in environmental details, Zullie estimates these giants to be a staggering 632 meters tall.
To put that into perspective, that’s nearly as tall as the Erdtree itself, and dwarfs even the mightiest dragons encountered in the game. Their sheer size suggests a power far exceeding anything players have encountered in Elden Ring so far, which makes the question of their demise even more intriguing.
Their scattered remains on the Mountaintop imply a violent end, but what force could have felled creatures of such immense stature? It could’ve been the combined might of all the demigods, but it’s all speculation. It’s also theorized that these giants were the original inhabitants of The Lands Between, before the Elden Beast landed and potentially wiped them out.
Zullie the Witch speculates that the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC might offer some answers about the age of the giants. It could reveal some lore tidbits about the giants in their prime and the events that led to their extinction.
But for now, the skeletons of the Mountaintops remain a frightening relic of a bygone era. These giants may be long gone, but their legacy serves as a chilling reminder of the horrors that befell The Lands Between, long before any of us step foot in it.
