2008 seemed to be a wild year for Hollywood as many modern classics were released that year. While the MCU began with Iron Man in the same year, the superhero genre also changed with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. The film starred Christian Bale in his second outing as the Caped Crusader and it was universally acclaimed. The film earned $1.06 billion at the box office.
The year also saw many other heavy hitters such as the fourth film in the Indiana Jones franchise i.e. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Daniel Craig’s second James Bond Quantum of Solace as well. However, in the same week as Bale’s The Dark Knight, Meryl Streep’s Mamma Mia! released, raking in a whopping $640 million at the box office.
Despite not being Summer blockbuster material, Mamma Mia! became the highest-grossing live-action musical until it was surpassed by Beauty and the Beast in 2017. It was also the highest-grossing film made by a women director until Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (via Market Watch). The film’s sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again received more positive responses despite earning less than the original.
Mamma Mia! is currently streaming on Fubo TV. The Dark Knight is streaming on Max.
