Helldivers 2 has been a pretty exciting addition to the co-op shooter genre, especially after so many disappointing or outright failed live-service games.
The game has received critical acclaim since its release earlier this year and has been able to maintain an extremely consistent player base with great developer feedback and support as well.
Helldivers 2 is Great, but It Could Use Some Arcade Modes
The game’s emphasis on teamwork and tactical gameplay has gained a lot of praise from everyone. There’s a great sense of community and roleplay involved. However, as much as fans enjoy fighting for democracy, the game’s mission structure can feel repetitive after a while. Every mission seems to follow a similar formula: drop in, fight waves of enemies, complete objectives, and extract.
It’s a solid formula, but it could use some variety. This is where Gears of War comes into play, particularly its Horde mode. Helldivers 2 could benefit greatly from incorporating similar diverse modes, providing players with fresh and engaging experiences.
First off, let’s talk about why Gears of War’s Horde mode is so beloved. Horde mode pits players against endless waves of increasingly difficult enemies. It’s not just about survival; it requires strategy, teamwork, and resource management. Players have to decide where to set up defenses, which weapons to use, how to allocate limited resources, etc.
This creates a dynamic and challenging experience that keeps players coming back for more. Implementing a similar mode in Helldivers 2 could provide a much-needed change of pace from the standard mission structure and ensure that the game lives on for years to come.
Imagine dropping into a fortified base where waves of enemies relentlessly attack from all sides. You and your team would need to fortify positions, set up turrets, and manage limited ammo and supplies. This mode would emphasize the cooperative aspect of Helldivers 2 even more, requiring players to communicate and work together to survive—something that they already do extremely well.
Helldivers 2 Could Use a Few Other Game Modes as Well Such as Fortress Attack
Another exciting addition could be fortress attack missions. Instead of defending a position, players would have to storm enemy fortresses, overcome defenses, and eliminate high-value targets. These missions could be designed to encourage different strategies, such as using vehicles to breach walls or utilizing specialized equipment to disable enemy defenses. The focus would be on offense and aggression instead.
Having varied modes would make Helldivers 2 a more variety-filled game and keep players coming back to try out different things. Currently, the emphasis on fighting for aliens and automatons and completing similar objectives can make the gameplay feel repetitive after months of gameplay.
These modes would also allow for more creative use of the game’s mechanics and environments. The developers could design unique maps and challenges tailored to each mode. This could also open up opportunities for post-launch updates and expansions.
To keep players engaged and to offer a more diverse experience, it could look at other games and possibly consider adding new arcade modes, stealth missions, and fortress attacks.
