Penn Badgley’s hit Netflix series You has become a sensation among fans and Joe Goldberg’s chaotic shenanigans impressed fans in the first four seasons. The charismatic yet dangerous serial killer’s thrilling journey kept fans intrigued and the character has done some heinous things throughout his run in the show so far.
One of the recurring narratives of the show is Goldberg’s tendency to kill his old love interest when he falls for a new woman. This aspect has been criticized by some fans as it made the show repetitive. Unfortunately, the final season may be doing the same as the set photos seem to indicate a new love interest for Joe.
You Season 5 Set Photos May Have Confirmed A New Love Interest for Joe Goldberg
Netflix’s hit series You introduced the world to Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg. The infamous serial killer’s complex characterization and Badgley’s compelling performance intrigued fans, even leading for some to have an affinity for him. However, the irredeemable character has followed a particular modus operandi for his victims throughout the four seasons of the show.
Throughout the show. Goldberg always falls for a new woman every season and finds ways to get rid of the one to whom he’s currently committed: Love in season 2, Marienne in season 3, and Kate in season 4. At the end of season 4, Joe thinks of settling down with Kate in New York. However, it seems his old habits are catching up to him once again.
In new set photos of the fifth and final season of You, Badgley’s Joe is seen spending time with a new woman in his life played by Madeline Brewer. Fans are getting tired of getting the same trope every season, and are concerned that the final season will not provide anything new. Here are some of the reactions on X,
imagine you give a man all your families wealth, power and title to help him escape his past and he repays you by cheating on you with a GINGER (the call is coming from inside the house, im a ginge) pic.twitter.com/KCWiEs4cXF

I don't see why you're surprised. Love had done exactly the same and it ended badly. You have to admit, that Joe was never in love with Kate. He was with her only because Marianne rejected him. He no longer wears the ring, on several previous filming photos

While the repetitive trope of the show has certainly become tiring, it falls in line with how Goldberg functions as an individual. His current relationship with Kate is the same thing as what happened with his previous victims and are not born out of true love. As a serial killer, he thrives through obsessing, luring and finally killing his victims. It remains to be seen how Goldberg fares in the final season.
