MCU has been known for its ever-changing lineup of characters and actors, capturing the imagination of fans. Therefore, as the excitement around upcoming Marvel projects heightens, the discussion about potential castings takes center stage. More than anything, with Jonathan Majors out of the scene, there appeared a significant buzz surrounding the possibility of Colman Domingo stepping into the role of Kang the Conqueror.
Especially after Colman Domingo’s interview on Jake’s Takes, where he coyly hinted at the possibility of taking over Jonathan Majors’ mantle, excitement and speculation surged. Although there has been no official confirmation and several actors are still running for the role, Domingo’s interview almost made fans believe that MCU has perhaps found its next big villain.
Colman Domingo Addressed the Possibility of Replacing Jonathan Majors as Kang
Ever since Jonathan Majors was fired from his role as Kang the Conqueror, in December 2023 following his assault conviction, there appeared a surge in speculations about who might take over the mantle, or if MCU will replace Kang with some other baddie. Since then fans and netizens have taken things into their own hands and fan cast several actors in the role of Kang.
However, according to reports, two major actors seemingly made headlines for the possibility of playing Kang the Conqueror. Tenet star John David Washington and The Color Purple actor Colman Domingo are the ones who are being eyed to take over the mantle following Jonathan Majors’ exit. Meanwhile, although Washington refused to address his rumored casting, Domingo teased fans with the possibility.
Although Marvel is yet to confirm John David Washington or Colman Domingo’s casting as Kang the Conqueror, the latter seemingly hinted at the possibility of stepping into the role. During his interview on Jake’s Takes, Domingo teased the rumor, which made fans believe that MCU might have allegedly found the next actor to play Kang.
I know it’s just between you and me, but you’re playing Kang aren’t you? Interviewer asked.
Everyone thinks that. I don’t know. Who knows? I’ve no idea, I’m no Hollywood, you tell me? Domingo responded.
That sounds the kind of thing, the person playing Kang would say. Interviewer joked.
Colman Domingo addressing the swirling rumors about him playing Kang not only fueled speculations but also hinted at the MCU’s readiness to explore new avenues for one of its most complex villains. But amid rumors, it’s yet to confirm if Domingo will step into the role or John David Washington, or if Marvel is planning on casting someone entirely different.
Actors Who Previously Denied MCU Roles After Their Official Casting
If despite heightening the speculations surrounding his potential casting, Colman Domingo refuses to take on the role at the last minute, he won’t be the only one doing so. Marvel Studios have previously faced a significant amount of rejection from actors after they were almost cast into iconic superhero characters.
According to an
interview with Howard Stern, Oscar-nominated actress Emily Blunt turned out to be one iconic star who was initially cast as Black Widow until scheduling issues forced her to drop out of the Marvel role. Similarly, even Jason Momoa was once hired to play Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Drax. However, as per IGN, Momoa turned down the opportunity, since Drax was similar to a number of other roles he played previously.
Even Kingsman star Taron Egerton had once come inches close to being cast as Cyclops in the original X-Men franchise. However, according to his interview with SiriusXM’s Sway in the Morning, his casting conversation with Marvel didn’t go far since he refused to play Cyclops whose eyes were covered. Finding it extremely challenging to play a role with covered eyes, especially since he believed eyes were the windows to the soul, Egerton rejected the offer.
