Keanu Reeves has been synonymous with projects like The Matrix, John Wick, and many more. Yet, one of his most famous and fan-favorite roles has been in Constantine, a movie based on the cynical and tormented detective-exorcist from the world of DC comics. Ever since Reeves starred as the character back in 2005, fans have been demanding a sequel to the hit cult classic, wanting to see Reeves back in action.
While the news of a sequel has been in circulation for a while now, after a recent update by Akiva Goldsman, it seems we might finally have Reeves as Constantine again.
Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2 is Finally in the Works
Keanu Reeves‘ Constantine might not have been as well received by the critics, but the 2005 flick has since become a cult classic. Starring Reeves as John Constantine, an exorcist with supernatural abilities, the movie is one of the actor’s best and fan-favorite works of all time.
Over the years, there have been plenty of times when news of a sequel being developed was rumored, but nothing conclusive had been done so far. However, it seems fans might finally be getting a sequel after waiting patiently all these years. Recently, producers Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Akiva Goldsman, revealed to Collider that a script for the sequel is currently being written. Speaking to it being R-rated-
Oh, I can’t say that. I’m definitely writing a script about Constantine.
Stated Goldsman, as Bonaventura revealed a funny story of how the first film got made.
Our boss was an ardent anti-smoker, and he was absolutely against this movie because he’s a character. So, there are funny things that get movies made. This is what happened, I went to him and said, ‘This is an anti-smoking movie.’ And he said, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, He gets cancer.’ He got me money.
Apart from the producers, even Keanu Reeves himself has been vocal about his potential return to the character. Even last year, while promoting John Wick 4, Reeves had stated to Collider how he would love to return to play Constantine once again. And it was eventually one of Reeves’ interviews that ended up being a catalyst for the potential upcoming sequel.
Keanu Reeves’ Wish to Reprise Role Drives Constantine 2 Forward
Keanu Reeves has always been vocal about his love for John Constantine and has spoken about his desire to return as the character once again. But, until now, a sequel has failed to take place, making fans grow desperate and hopeless.
But while talking to Collider, producer Akiva Goldsman revealed how an interview of Reeves with Stephen Colbert eventually drove the sequel forward, stating,
There was always this desire, if not lurching, to try to redo it. We tried it for TV, and we could never quite get the rights back; the rights were sort of going around. There was a sort of ground swell—there was a TV series somewhere in there.
Then Keanu went on Colbert—not two nights ago when he did it again, but a few years ago, and said, ‘It’s the one character I’d like to revisit,’ and you’d be stunned what would do when it comes to a studio’s enthusiasm. So, life returned.
Reeves once again, just days ago on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert show, revealed how that interview of his proved to be a catalyst for the sequel. With a sequel finally in the works and potentially being R-rated as well, it seems Keanu Reeves’ fans are finally just years away from Constantine 2, and we can hardly wait as well!
Constantine can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
