The New Jersey native expressed admiration for the director’s talent in weaving queer stories on screen. She’s hoping to work with Guadagnino someday despite previously stating she’s done with trans roles.

In an interview with Vogue, actress Hunter Schafer revealed her aspiration to work with Italian film director Luca Guadagnino.

I love the way he does queer storytelling. I have lots of dreams of movies about trans women, and I feel like he could do that really beautifully.

This statement came on the heels of her previous interview with GQ magazine. She remarked how only being recognized as a “trans actress” was “ultimately demeaning”. Additionally, she said:

I’ve been offered tons of trans roles, and I just don’t want to do it. I don’t want to talk about it. I know for a fact that I’m one of the most famous trans people in media right now, and I do feel a sense of responsibility, and maybe a little bit of guilt, for not being more of a spokesperson.

Despite this, she professed wanting to do more films with queer stories and characters, specifically with Guadagnino. The director is known for Timothée Chalamet’s Call Me By Your Name, the movie that propelled the French-American actor to stardom.

He earned several Best Actor nominations for his role as Elio Perlman, including Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and SAG Awards. The film won Best Adapted Screenplay for James Ivory at the Oscars and nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Song for Sufjan Stevens’ Mystery of Love.

Guadagnino’s attention to detail, artistic direction, and use of symbolism are the pillars of his works, and an opportunity for Schafer to star in one of his movies might be the best thing that will ever happen in her career.

Her performance in Euphoria as a transgender woman was lauded by fans and critics, so it’s not quite a far-fetched possibility that she would bag an Oscar nomination – or a win – for a Guadagnino movie.

During her talk at the CSUF, Schafer revealed how it felt like “magic” the first time she saw someone like her on television. She said:

It’s so surreal because television is like this untouchable portal that’s been there your whole life, ignoring you. And now, you’re there.

It’s because of this that the Cuckoo star hopes for Guadagnino to venture into bringing the spotlight to trans women. He has done a couple of queer movies in his career, including Daniel Craig’s upcoming historical romance drama entitled Queer, so he might want to explore and expand his niche.

Call Me By Your Name is available to watch on Netflix.
