Actor Wentworth Miller played the lead role of Michael Scofield in the Fox drama series Prison Break. Miller’s performance was extremely well-received, with his character forming the core of the show’s narrative. Despite reviving the series for a fifth season, Miller shut the door on potentially returning for another round of the acclaimed series.

In a social media post, Miller explained why he was no longer interested in reprising the role of the genius structural engineer. As a result, it is unlikely that we will ever see a sixth installment of Prison Break. However, the series is more than likely to return to our screens. Here is why Wentworth Miller will not be involved in the future of Prison Break.
Wentworth Miller Revealed Why He Didn’t Return For Prison Break Season 6
Wentworth Miller became a household name with his performance as Michael Scofield in the Fox drama series Prison Break. The series initially went off the air in 2009 after four seasons. However, it was revived for a fifth installment in 2017.

Despite reviving the series, Miller expressed an unwillingness to reprise the role. In 2020, Miller took to Instagram, where he addressed the future of Prison Break, especially his involvement with the television series. Miller wrote (via Newsweek):
I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).
Miller’s words confirm that he isn’t interested in returning to the role of Scofield.
Furthermore, the actor’s statement implied that he did not wish to continue with the role of a straight character, especially since Miller came out as gay in 2013. Miller’s original statement also stated:
If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.
The above comment confirmed that Miller would not return for a sixth season. While his character on The Flash was revealed to be gay, Miller’s Prison Break role wasn’t. As a result, it is easy to understand why Miller did not want to reprise the role in a potential sixth season.
Prison Break Will Be Back But Not With a Sixth Season
Miller was involved with the revival of Prison Break, with the series returning for a fifth season after a lengthy hiatus. Following the success of season 5, it was announced in 2018 that the series would continue with season 6. However, those plans were scrapped just a year later, with the network confirming that it did not have plans for future seasons.

Furthermore, continuing the plot thread from the original series would be extremely difficult without Miller’s involvement. With the actor shutting the door firmly on a potential return, the show’s future now rests on the potential reboot series that was first announced in 2023.
According to a report from Deadline, a reboot was revealed to be in development at Hulu in November last year. Elgin James, the creator of Mayans M.C., was announced to be helming the reboot.
However, updates regarding the upcoming new iteration have been few and far between. Nonetheless, the project will feature an all-new cast, ending any hopes of an authentic Prison Break season 6 with the original cast reprising their roles once more.
Prison Break is streaming on Hulu.
