When it was first released, Until Dawn quickly became one of the PlayStation 4’s standout titles. The game’s mix of horror, interactive storytelling, and choice-driven gameplay won over many players.

It was akin to a Telltale game, but with cutting-edge graphical fidelity and animations. Now, almost a decade later, the game is getting a complete makeover with a new remake built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5.

This Until Dawn Remaster is set to arrive on PlayStation 5 and PC on October 4. Despite the impressive visual and technical upgrades showcased in the newly released trailer, fans are left questioning whether it is truly necessary, just like The Last of Us Part 1 remake.

Despite all these improvements, a significant portion of the fanbase remains unconvinced about the necessity of this remake. Many believe that the original Until Dawn still holds up well, both in terms of gameplay and visuals.

The game’s graphics, while not cutting-edge for 2024, are still considered impressive for a title released in 2015. For these players, a remaster, rather than a full-blown remake, would have been enough.

The game’s narrative and horror elements remain just as compelling as they were at launch, along with the replay value and branching paths, leading some to question whether these new features and graphical upgrades justify buying the game once again.

The comparison to The Last of Us Part 1 remake, which also faced similar criticisms, has been made repeatedly. Some fans argue that the resources used for this remake could have been better spent on new projects or expanding the existing universe with new content. This would be a great time for a Bloodborne remaster too.

Ballistic Moon, a relatively new studio, has taken the reins for this rerelease as the original developers, Supermassive Games, are occupied with other projects such as The Dark Pictures anthology.

The studio’s primary goal was to make the game more cinematic and intimate, which aligns well with the game’s horror roots. By utilizing Unreal Engine 5, the team was able to introduce various visual enhancements.

The character models now boast higher fidelity and more detailed textures. Environments look more immersive, with improved lighting and shadow effects.

Ray tracing and upgraded rendering capabilities also add to the atmosphere, making the game feel even more eerie and unsettling than it previously was.

The remake also introduces a shift in the gameplay perspective. Instead of the fixed camera angles that players were used to in the original, much of the action in the remake will happen from a third-person perspective with a controllable camera.

This change is intended to offer players more flexibility and a fresh take on exploring the game’s horror environments. Ballistic Moon has also added new collectibles and revamped the prologue to enhance the pacing of the story.

The studio has also worked on improving accessibility features, making it easier for a broader audience to experience the horror of this game.
