Until Dawn was the start of something big for Supermassive Games. Thanks to the success of this title, the studio could make other games like The Dark Pictures anthology, The Quarry, and several other games that are in development.
Until Dawn has a live-action adaptation that is already in development, but unfortunately, the studio has suffered a very similar thing that is invading the industry: layoffs. Supermassive has confirmed this on social media, and some insiders are talking about 90 layoffs.
Until Dawn creators, Supermassive Games joins the list of companies that make several employees cut
Videogames are the most profitable entertainment business ever. This particular industry makes billions of dollars every year. Mobile gaming is bringing profits like never before, but apparently, this is not enough, and this business is suffering from a very complicated cut system that many companies are choosing to follow.
The Until Dawn creators, Supermassive Games, just posted on X that they made the difficult decision to restructure the studio, and some employees were laid off. This studio has made various very popular titles in the last couple of years, and they are even working on a live-action version of Until Dawn.
But aside from all these games, the number is not adding up, and they have cut numerous employees. This studio is aiming to change its workflow to make the company sustainable by not making more layoffs.

More jobs are lost, and the industry takes another blow
Supermassive Games are reportedly set to lay-off a total of 90 employees in the coming weeks and days. When you compare this as a whole to the previous year, it doesn’t seem a considerable amount, but with the rest of the companies thrown in, it’s a terrifying indictment of where the gaming industry is right now.
Just in 2023, approximately 9,000 people at video game companies lost their jobs. Just in the first two months of 2024, more than 6,500 employees were cut, or almost 80% of 2023. This is a very terrifying figure for developers. It seems that the overly expensive cost of developing a game is making the industry make new strategies and be more cautious about how you face an AA or AAA project.
Supermassive Games is working on various titles, like Little Nightmares 3 and the new entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology. The studio is also working on a new interactive movie similar to Until Dawn. No more details were given about new projects or games.
More layoffs are a terrible thing, especially with the record profits the gaming industry has had as a whole over the last twelve months. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
