Ricky Gervais‘ version of The Office was a big hit in the UK with its mockumentary-style approach and quirky characters. Gervais created an iconic character in the form of David Brent and the show went on for two seasons. When NBC got the rights for an American remake of the show, fans were understandably apprehensive.

The US version of The Office was led by Steve Carrell as Michael Scott and fans of the UK version were skeptical about the potential of the adaptation. Carrell’s version started on a bad note with season 1 being not so great. However, the show slowly picked up its pace and is now an iconic sitcom. The cycle resumes as an Australian version of the show is currently in development.

Domhnall Gleeson Reached Out To Steve Carrell Before Accepting The Paper

Domhnall Gleeson is set to lead a follow-up show to Steve Carrell‘s The Office called The Paper. The new show will be moving on from the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company and will focus on a declining Midwestern newspaper company. In an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Carrell revealed that Gleeson reached out to him.

The two were friends as they had worked on The Patient and Carrell’s co-star inquired about his experiences on his show. He is confident that Gleeson will do a great job as one of the leads of The Paper. The Anchorman star said,

I know Domhnall Gleeson, who I did The Patient with, is going to be one of the leads. I know that for sure. He’s an excellent actor. He actually called me and asked, you know, ‘Should I do this? Did you enjoy it?’ He’s great.

The new follow-up show will also star White Lotus‘ Sabrina Impacciatore and is created by Greg Daniels, the developer of Carrell’s The Office. The Paper will premiere on Peacock at a yet-to-be-determined date. As of this year, the Australian version of The Office will premiere all 8 episodes on Prime Video on October 18, 2024.
