Following the recent release of Echo, the next Marvel Cinematic Universe television series to hit the Disney+ platform is Agatha: Darkhold Diaries at the end of 2024. The show will see the brilliant Kathryn Hahn reprising her role as Marvel witch Agatha Harkness, who she previously played in 2021’s superb WandaVision series.
The series – said to be the darkest MCU show yet – has undergone two title changes since it was announced. It was initially called Agatha: House of Harkness and then Agatha: Coven of Chaos. However, Marvel Studios seems to have settled on Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. Or have they?
A curious fan theory about the show suggests all three announced titles are correct, and the series will evolve into different titles as it progresses. Precisely what is meant by this is explained further by the theorist.
How Will This Agatha Harkness Show Theory Work?
If you recall, Agatha Harkness appeared in Westview during the events of WandaVision because she was obsessed with obtaining Wanda Maximoff’s power. To gain access to said power, she entered Westview and lived under the pretense of being part of the sitcom simulation Maximoff had created, playing a character called Agnes. She had, of course, stolen Ralph Bohner’s house and was, in reality, utterly unaffected by the mystical simulation.
At WandaVision’s climax, following her defeat at the hands of Maximoff, Elizabeth Olsen placed a hex on Harkness so that she was mind-controlled to live as Agnes for real. That’s the last MCU viewers saw of the character.
This theory suggests the theme of Harkness being in mystical simulations of television shows will continue, with Agatha: House of Harkness kicking things off.
The show will begin with that title and be a reality television show in the mold of Real Housewives, with the former members of Agatha’s coven as other “cast members,” exploiting Harkness’ vulnerable predicament following the events of WandaVision and using it to keep tabs on her.
There’ll be catfights and lots of drama, and, eventually, Harkness will shake off part of the spell she’s under, realize she’s in another simulation, and angrily snap out of it.
At that point, the show will transform into Agatha: Coven of Chaos, a mystery thriller along the lines of Murder She Wrote, in which Harkness attempts to unearth the truth about her current predicament and, again, interacts with her former coven members, still not necessarily realizing who they are at this point.
The other coven members are doing everything possible to prevent Harkness from obtaining the Darkhold, concerned that she has plans to conquer the world with it. Eventually, she figures that out, switching the show’s title again and evolving it to its third and final chapter.
How Will It Evolve Into Agatha: Darkhold Diaries?
The show’s most recently announced title, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, then commences with Harkness fully aware that her coven is involved. She gets them on her side by convincing them that she doesn’t want the Darkhold to give her world-conquering power; she wants it to bring Wanda Maximoff back.
The theory suggests, however, that there will still be one coven member plotting against her. Patti LuPone’s Lilia Calderu is that one member. The idea delves deeper and posits she’ll have an even more powerful force backing her up – none other than Mephisto, who’s been rumored to appear in several MCU projects but hasn’t yet (Sacha Boran Cohen has long been rumored to play the powerful evil character in the franchise).
It’s undoubtedly an intriguing theory that would trump the unusual events of WandaVision emphatically. Regardless of how the show plays out, with a cast including Hahn, LuPone, Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, and Debra Jo Rupp, it’s sure to be superb.
