Plenty of classes of Space Marines to choose from were boasted in the recent trailers for the game. In a recent interview with Game Reactor, the game’s creative director, Oliver Hollis-Leick, talked about how prominent various classes in the game will be when the interviewer asked him about them.

In attempts to establish some context, the director also talked about Battle Barges in the game, and this is what he said:

So, our hub in the game is the Battle Barge, it’s this huge, miles-long flying fortress filled with all kinds of crazy stuf…A giant flying killer city, basically.

The above description makes the Battle Barge seem like it will be hustling and bustling with all kinds of cavaliers raring to not just engage in battle but fight a space war. Based on the description alone, Bethesda should have considered something similar when designing the Brotherhood of Steel’s Airships in the Fallout games.

Fallout’s Airships Seem Leaps and Bounds Behind Battle Barges From Space Marine 2

Airships in Bethesda's dystopian RPG games and even the Prime Video web series missed a massive opportunity with airships.

The description of Battle Barges is part of what makes airships in Fallout feel lifeless. These gigantic air carriers, whose appearance in the Prime Video series had a more significant implication for the game’s universe, were much less exciting.

Airships closer to Battle Barges from the game would work very well in the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout. Also, airships used for inflicting offense would make for a much better offering because superficial air vessels like the ones in the game do not make sense.

With the culture and nature of the world of Fallout, the brutality of the airships is way understated. Whilst the Brotherhood of Steel uses their regimented rules to represent them as a place of control and order, every now and then a Ghoul uprising or raiders commandeering could add to the violence of the games. Imagine coming upon a docked airship and it being full of bodies, a mystery as to how it happened, and you, the player, have to figure everything out. Maybe in Fallout 5.

Their only use was to scout, and it didn’t outweigh the explosive hazard and inevitable Brotherhood of Steel, which was more vulnerable, making for a terrible inclusion overall. While the two video games are incredibly different, the Battle Barges make airships seem like hot air balloons waiting to explode.
