2023 was a great year for video game adaptations, which witnessed the media triumphing on both the big and the small screen. But while The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s were box-office successes, with the former becoming one of the biggest releases of 2023, they still struggled to score decent among critics.
However, this wasn’t the case for arguably the best video game adaptation so far that Hollywood has to offer, as Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s The Last of Us was a huge hit among both fans and critics. And unlike the other Super Mario and Freddy, The Last of Us is heading high into the awards season, with the first Night of Emmy Awards witnessing the show sweeping 8 wins.
The Last of Us Scores 8 Wins at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards
Like the PlayStation title, the adaptation too was received exceptionally well and made history after attaining 24 Emmy nods, including Awards for Best Actor, Writer, Drama Series, and Director. But prior to heading into the Primetime Emmys as one of the favorites, The Last of Us didn’t fall short in the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which kicked off last night. Throughout the night, the show garnered 8 wins, which involved Awards for Prosthetic Makeup, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Picture Editing, Main Title Design, Special Visual Effects, and Guest Actress and Actor.
Following its domination in the technical department, which was completely deserved, fans will hope this isn’t the last of The Last of Us at the Emmys.
Pedro Pascal Was Left in Disbelief After Learning the Game’s Ending
Interestingly, for a show that is so true to the source material, Pedro Pascal has very little knowledge about the actual PlayStation classic. While Pascal did pick up the controller to play the game despite showrunner Craig Mazin asking the leads not to, he was unable to complete a certain level, leading to his nephews taking the controller. During his conversation with TWD Star Steven Yeun on Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Pascal was left in disbelief after Yeun spoiled the ending of the game, stating “Nothing happens. You just walk through the forest.”
““Are you serious?… You’ve told me more about the game than the creator of the video game.” said Pascal.
With the show heading for a second season, it’ll be interesting to see how faithful the HBO show will be to the second game, which was exponentially more polarizing than the first one.
The Last of Us is available to stream on Max.
