The Marvels starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris, was a massive disappointment at the box office. The highly anticipated film that was touted to be the embodiment of feminine power, ended up being a damp squib with fans and critics brutally panning the narrative. This was an unfortunate result after the first film achieved success at the box office.
With the dubious distinction of having the lowest opening weekend of any MCU film, the desire to develop another Captain Marvel film with Larson was recently dashed to the ground following information from an inside source. Fans of the franchise believed that this decision was brought on by the hate targeted towards the Captain Marvel films by hardcore male fans who were unable to accept a kickass female superhero.
Who Is To Blame For Captain Marvel 3 Rejection?
Brie Larson’s introduction to the MCU as Captain Marvel was a successful outing for the star with the film making $1.1 billion worldwide at the box office despite receiving some critical reviews. In 2023, Marvel brought together the two narratives featuring Larson and Iman Vellani who played Miss Marvel in the Disney+ series, to create The Marvels.
Unfortunately, the film tanked miserably at the box office and received a lot of flak from audiences and critics. While many felt that these criticisms were unfair and unwarranted, the negative responses meant that Marvel would now have to think twice before making a 3rd film in the Captain Marvel series.
As expected, an inside source on X has now confirmed that Captain Marvel 3 will not see the light of day. Following this news, a few netizens weighed in on the misogynistic reasons behind this rejection. One fan believed that nerdy male Marvel buffs and their aversion for strong women played a huge part in the film not materializing.
“All because a bunch of nerds hate women”
To expand on the fan’s thoughts, the Captain Marvel films have faced their share of hate campaigns and toxic male chauvinistic views brought on by a section of ‘fanbros’ who reportedly have not been able to wrap their heads around powerful women owning the screen. A significant reason for their attitude was due to Brie Larson herself.
Brie Larson Hesitated To Play Captain Marvel In The Marvels
While Captain Marvel was a bonafide box office success, the film also received some negative responses which augmented even more when Brie Larson’s controversial comments while defending her movie A Wrinkle in Time, surfaced. The Oscar winner was severely trolled for her statement regarding white males and why they were not the target audience for the film.
Following the toxicity and ‘hate bombing’ she was subjected to online, Larson reportedly had second thoughts about reprising her role in 2023’s The Marvels. According to Joanna Robinson on The Watch podcast, the Room star even contemplated stepping down from the responsibility.
“[Marvel Studios] put Brie Larson in [a prominent place in the MCU]. I don’t know if Brie Larson was the wrong person for the role, necessarily. But the toxic backlash means that Brie Larson doesn’t want to play Carol Danvers anymore.”
While Larson did not act on this impulse and signed on for The Marvels, her worst fears were confirmed when the film was ripped apart brutally by fans and critics across the world. Now, with a 3rd Captain Marvel film being officially shelved, the celebrity’s future in the MCU is up in the air.
The Marvels and Captain Marvel can be streamed on Disney+
