He met his wife, Ami Barbson, on the set of Homicide: Life on the Street. Having debuted as a sidekick detective in the television film series, Kojak, Braugher was subsequently cast as a ferocious detective in his breakout performance in Homicide: Life on the Street. The show ran from 1992 to 1998, and in 1998, Braugher won his first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor for the series.

Over the years, he was cast in several significant roles across movies and TV series. In 2006, he took on the role of a thief, Nick Atwater, in the FX mini-series Thief. The critically acclaimed show won him his second Emmy. Later, he also starred as a middle-aged anxiety-stricken dad in Men of a Certain Age. Braugher was nominated for two Emmy Awards in 2010 and 2011 for his performance on the series.
