Being one of the most popular and revered actresses in the industry, it becomes a very important decision for Angelina Jolie to make sure that the roles she takes in all the Hollywood projects in her career are executed to perfection. She has to make sure and take responsibility for her actions that will make or break the future of the project she’ll be working on.

Thus, she will always make sure that she takes on a project only if she is sure she can make the most out of it for both herself as well as the audience. That is why it came as no surprise when the star revealed that she had gotten a chance to play the role of another superhero before her role in Eternals in the MCU that she declined in the end.

There have been many Hollywood legends that have taken the policy to only take on roles in films that they can connect with on some level to better bring that character to life with their performances. Thus, the decision for playing the role of Thena was made by Hollywood star Angelina Jolie with similar factors taken into consideration. Although this was her first rodeo as a superhero, there was a possibility that the role would’ve been for another character.

During the press tour for the then-upcoming film, the Tomb Raider star was in an interview with Empire, where she revealed her reasons for taking on the role in the MCU. She said that despite her personal preference to not take on roles relating to supernatural entities from the comic book world. she felt that her character in the film had something special to her. She said:

“I don’t usually lean towards superhero or sci-fi films. It’s not usually what I’m looking to do. It felt like something else was happening in this film, though. It was very character-driven.”

She also implied that there was one instance when she was approached by an official who wanted her to play a different role of a female superhero, but she had to politely decline that offer. Her reluctance to not name the character came from her respect towards the privacy of the company as well as of the actress that played the role after her rejection.

Although the film might not have made the biggest impact at the box office, similar to the entirety of Phase 4 of the MCU, it doesn’t mean The Eternals would never be seen again. In the post-credit scenes of the film, we were introduced to the existence of the higher beings known as The Celestials, along with the kidnapping of Sersei, which will connect to the wider narrative of Phase 5 of the MCU somewhere in the future. Thus, we will definitely see the return of Jolie along with the rest of the Eternals.
