Based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger, The Devil Wears Prada shares an insight into the glamorous yet cutthroat fashion world. It solidified its position in popular culture due to its memorable dialogues, stunning costumes, and stylish settings overall.
However, one can’t forget the iconic characters introduced in the film. In particular, Meryl Streep‘s Miranda Priestly, a formidable editor-in-chief of the prestigious Runway magazine in the movie.
Her character is quite influential in the fashion world with the ability to make or break careers with her single word. Given that her character holds great importance, she wanted to look a certain way.
When asked if The Post actress was also told to lose weight for her role during a 2006 appearance on The View, Streep replied, “They wouldn’t dare.”
That promptly led the hosts to comment that she looked skinny in the movie to which she stated, “I lost seven pounds, it killed me.” However, she recovered her weight soon enough but in the case of her co-stars, they had to face a whole ordeal in the process which ended up making them cry.

To deliver their best performances, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt had to put in extra effort. Playing the assistants of Miranda was not an easy task which many already witnessed in the movie. Behind the scenes, the ladies had to shed pounds which took a toll on them.
The Hustle actress, in particular, faced a complicated weight loss journey as she was initially told to “gain 10 lbs” which she attained with junk food and beer.
She told PEOPLE, “The director and producers asked me to gain 10 lbs.”
However, her happiness was short-lived as she was asked to lose pounds again to fit into the specific attire she was required to wear in the project.
“’This isn’t going to work. You have to fit into couture. Lose 10 lbs.’ It was a nightmare. It took me about a month to gain it and two months to lose it!”
Even the Oppenheimer actress joined her in the process, leaving the duo in tears. Hathaway shared via Contact Music,
“I was thin for my height. I was basically stuck with fruit, vegetables, and fish. I wouldn’t recommend that. Emily Blunt and I would clutch at each other and cry because we were so hungry.”
Their efforts eventually yielded great results as the movie grossed over $326 million worldwide via Box Office Mojo. The Devil Wears Prada is available for purchase on Apple TV.
