While Roblox has been available on PC, mobile and Xbox One for some time, the PlayStation release of the game will bring the creation platform to a whole new player base. While the platform is a hit with individuals of all ages a 2020 Statista survey of 400,000 UK children found Roblox to be overwhelmingly more popular with children, as 67% of participants stated they played it.

The PlayStation launch was unveiled at Roblox’s annual Developers Conference. Although we now have a release window for the game, details about an exact launch date were surprisingly vague. All we know is that both players on PS4 and PS5 would be able to: “access the full catalogue of Roblox experiences”.

Roblox also announced some new technology that will soon be implemented into their platform, with the Connect feature. Connect, is a system that allows players to call each other in the game using their real names, body language and facial movements.

The feature will transfer their real-world expressions onto their in-game character by having players point their cameras at their faces. While a version of this motion-capture technology was first released in August, Connect is the first attempt to pair this tech with real-life calls.

Before players can use the feature, they must give their consent to use the camera. If this worries you, don’t fear as the company said in a privacy notice that it does not record or store information captured, clarifying that “video from your camera never leaves your device”.

While Roblox is praised for allowing children and young adults to unleash their creativity, this new feature may add to the ever-growing scrutiny that the platform faces around younger users’ online safety. In 2022 the NSPCC and Childline reported that since the pandemic, the number of children calling their helpline with concerns about Roblox had increased greatly within the UK.
