The Twisted Metal series is based on the classic vehicle combat video game franchise of the same name, but there has been no new game since PlayStation 3. The franchise has a massive fan following, and the TV show adaptation was well-received by the fans with positive reviews.

We asked Anthony Mackie about his background with the video game franchise before he got the offer to be in the show. Mackie said that he grew up playing the games but added that he wasn’t very good at them. He said that he has played thousands of times but has not managed to win any games so far. Here’s what he said:

I just really sucked at it. I have actually never won a battle in Twisted Metal and I’ve played it probably a thousand times and every single time I lose. So, that’s my background with Twisted Metal, but the game is so different to the show.

He also said that the main difference between the TV series and the video game is that the game has no character development or story. “The game was just like you shoot me, I shoot you,” he says.

Anthony also said that it was a “creative dream” for him to get to adapt the “iconic” characters of the video game and “be able to imagine and come up with their backstory.” “You don’t get that often, and I can’t think of another game where that would be the case,” he further added.

A Video Game in the Series Was Recently Cancelled by Sony

A game in the video game series was in development but is now reportedly canceled.
A game in the video game series was in development but is now reportedly canceled.

Back in 2022, it was reported that a Twisted Metal live-service reboot game was in development at UK studio Firesprite, as Sony wanted to bring back the franchise with the TV show. There was no information about the unannounced game after that, as it was only in early development and wasn’t fully green-lit.

A new report said last month that the game had been canceled due to the PlayStation Studios layoff. Sony announced layoffs at PlayStation Studios as part of a restructuring process, affecting several studios, including Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Firesprit, and others.

The company laid off around 900 employees and canceled several in-development titles, and one of the titles is said to be the above-mentioned live-service game. It cannot be said for certain that the game is shelved, but we may never truly know as the game wasn’t even announced.
