Jason Momoa’s run as Aquaman in the DCU has been received well by the audiences. He is returning for his second solo venture Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom which is scheduled to release on December 22, 2023. With the first film grossing a billion dollars at the box office, the cast must have gotten a significant raise in their pay for the second film.

As Variety reported back in 2022, Momoa renegotiated his deal and managed to earn a whopping $15 million for Aquaman 2. This is twice the amount that he received for the first film ($7.5 million). Another report by Variety revealed that Amber Heard (who plays Mera) also got double what she was paid for the first film ($2 million for Aquaman 2).

As the lead of a big-budget superhero film, it is understandable why Momoa was paid the big bucks, following the incredible success of the first film. While Heard is expected to have a smaller role compared to the first one, she got a raise in her pay as well. However, they may not get the opportunity to make a third film as the DCU is getting rebooted by James Gunn.

Jason Momoa‘s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is releasing in theatres this Friday. The actor talked to Entertainment Tonight about his experiences making the film. He also revealed his pessimism regarding the future of Aquaman in the DCU.

He revealed that although he would love to play the character as long as audiences want, the DCU is going in a new direction with James Gunn’s reboot. He claimed that the future of the character is not looking good, suggesting the end of his tenure as the character. He said,

“I don’t necessarily want it to be the end… [but] I don’t think it’s really, like, a choice. The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there’s a possibility. I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time But right now, I’m like, ‘It’s not looking too good.'”

It remains to be seen whether Gunn brings back Aquaman into his DCU in the future. Momoa is also rumored to be playing Lobo in his DCU so maybe his tenure as Aquaman is indeed over with the second film. Fans have to wait and see for updates regarding Momoa’s future in DC.
