The game was expected to be released by March 2025, but a few reports have stated that the game is aiming to launch later this year. This has fans thrilled, but the game is reportedly the first current-gen title that many fans will miss out on due to one problem that is out of their control.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Reportedly Won’t Be on Last-Gen Consoles

Assassin’s Creed Red, now Shadows, was announced back in September 2022 during a Ubisoft Forward showcase along with several other Assassin’s Creed titles and takes the franchise to feudal Japan, which has a longtime wish from fans and is most likely an open-world action RPG.

As much as fans are happy to know that the franchise is going to Japan and they may get to play the game this year itself, it is possible that a large chunk of players will not be able to play the game. This is because the game is seemingly only coming to current-gen consoles and will skip last-gen.

There have been multiple reports regarding this, and popular insider Shinobi602 has also said that the game is not coming to last-gen consoles. Shinobi602 replied to a user on the ResetEra gaming forum who shared a tweet claiming that the game was releasing on PS4 but not Xbox One.

The insider said, “It’s not,” meaning that the game will not launch for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and will not be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This will lead to several people being unable to play the game, as there are still many who haven’t gotten their hands on the current-gen consoles.

Ubisoft Had Already Hinted at This Long Back

The game will reportedly only launch for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.

This is the first time the latest Assassin’s Creed title will be a current-gen release only, as all the other titles have been released on last-gen as well. The previous entry in the franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, was also released on all platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, aside from the Nintendo Switch.

While this may come as shocking to some fans, Ubisoft did mention this during the Assassin’s Creed Showcase at Ubisoft Forward in 2022. The company had said that “starting with Assassin’s Creed Codename RED, games will be built specifically for current-gen consoles.”

It was added that this will allow developers extra time to improve the Anvil engine to deliver “a more polished experience.” It seems like the company has stuck to its plans, and going forward, all the Assassin’s Creed games will be current-gen only, and if players wish to play them, they will have to shift to newer consoles.
