The beauty of the Assassin’s Creed franchise is that it has taken us all over the map and brought to life many of the world’s most ancient civilizations with startling accuracy. Many were hoping the franchise would make its way to Japan at some point, due to the obvious ninja tropes, and their wishes were finally answered when Assassin’s Creed Codename Red was revealed.

That was just a working title, and we now have the official name for the game: Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The announcement comes via the official X page, along with the date for the release of the reveal trailer. Fans won’t have to wait long, as the trailer will drop on May 15 at 9 PM Pacific Time!

The announcement is done with a lot of flair as well. We see a street from a city in Japan, complete with flashing neon signs. In the center is a large hourglass with an LED sign flashing the date and time of the reveal trailer. The top of the hourglass is designed to look like a Japanese shrine.

While the location is going to excite a lot of people, others may not be as happy to know there are reportedly going to be live service elements in this game. Many studios are heavily leveraging this format of game development, as it offers the most monetization opportunities. However, it’s also a format that gets the most eyerolls from gamers, so Ubisoft will have to deliver on the content to ensure people don’t call it a hollow cash grab of a title.

Early Leaks Hinted at a Reveal Shortly

The game will feature two main characters, with one being a surprising addition.

As with everything in the gaming industry, there were leaks for Assassin’s Creed Shadows a while ago that led many to believe the game would be revealed soon. The leak showed the menu screen of the game, along with several other details, such as the resolution and framerate.

The franchise has been branching out considerably ever since the release of Origins. There, we saw Ubisoft adopting the open-world RPG approach that it followed for Odyssey and Valhalla. We even saw a return to roots with Mirage, a shorter narrative-focused adventure where stealth was given more importance than creating builds.

Shadows is going to change the formula even more. Using an evolved Anvil Pipeline engine, the game is going to bring more brutal combat, improved stealth, and a city-builder mechanic that will allow plates to customize their hideouts.

From understanding the complexities of a multilayer narrative to the simply joy of "big gun go boom", my goal is to capture all the emotions in between and put them down in an engaging manner.
