The Assassin’s Creed series has featured several historical eras so far, and Ubisoft seems keen on exploring even more. Mirage was in 9th-century Baghdad, the upcoming Red will be set in feudal Japan, and Hexe is rumored to be set in Central Europe during the 16th-century Roman Empire.

The possibilities seem endless with the franchise, and a cheeky hint from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla‘s senior writer, Alain Mercieca may point to another historical backdrop the series could venture to in the future: Brazil.

The Spanish Conquest Has Yet To Be Explored In The Series

Assassin's Creed Black Flag slightly touched on the Spanish conquest, but didn't explore it deeply.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag slightly touched on the Spanish conquest, but didn’t really explore it beyond that.

In an interview with The Gamer, Mercieca expressed his personal interest in exploring South America, particularly the time period surrounding the Spanish Conquistadors:

On a grander scale I do feel there is a rich tapestry of culture in South America that the brand has yet to explore fully. From the Incas to the Spanish Conquistadors, it is a very fascinating time. Though Black Flag did touch on some of it, I’m feeling more the Brazil region.

While the series hasn’t shied away from depicting conflict (Vikings and Crusades being prime examples), a deep dive into the Spanish conquest of South America would be a significant departure. This period witnessed the brutal subjugation of mighty civilizations like the Incas and Aztecs.

How Assassin’s Creed Brazil Can Mix History With Gameplay

The Conquistadors may have better weapons, but the Assassins will have the power of stealth on their side.

The Assassin’s Creed formula thrives on presenting a nuanced historical backdrop. The Spanish, fueled by a desire for gold and a manic craving for religious conversion, unleashed devastation on these civilizations. Being sworn protectors of free will, the Assassins could find themselves thrust into a power struggle against an oppressive regime.

The Conquistadors, equipped with superior weaponry, tactics, and brute force, shattered the complex social structures of the indigenous people. This historical context could be woven into the gameplay of the Brazil-set Assassin’s Creed title.

Stealth missions could involve rescuing cultural artifacts from plunderers or sabotaging the Conquistadors’ supply lines. The protagonist could also forge alliances with native resistance fighters, learning their guerrilla tactics and mastering the use of traditional weaponry à la Far Cry 6.

Of course, the series doesn’t shy away from creative liberties, either. The Assassins themselves are a fictional order, and the games often tweak elements from history to fit their particular stories or for gameplay purposes. Either way, a South American Assassin’s Creed could still offer a powerful exploration of a dark chapter in history.

With Red being set in feudal Japan, Ubisoft can branch out further in the future, and South America is very likely.

Mercieca’s comments don’t confirm a South American setting, but they do suggest a growing interest within the development team.

Whether it’s Brazil, the heart of the Inca Empire, or somewhere else entirely, South America is a very intriguing destination for a future Assassin’s Creed game.
