The Final Chapters saga of Attack on Titan is approaching a definitive end. Eren Yeager’s reversal from being a Titan killer to a Doomsday Titan who wants to erase mankind has been a rollercoaster ride for fans. Sharing his experiences voicing the English version of Yeager, Bryce Papenbrook revealed the lengths he took to depict Yeager’s miseries and actions as realistically as possible.
Papenbrook has previously worked in the English translations for Demon Slayer, Black Clover, and Tokyo Revengers. Possessing vast experience in the line of voice acting, he is known to use several methods to bring life into the characters. He revealed that he once bit his hand to convey the ‘anger’ and ‘pain’ Eren undergoes in order to transform into a Titan.
Bryce Papenbrook Hurt Himself To Relate With The Character of Eren Yeager From Attack on Titan
At the New York Comic Con in the middle of October, Attack on Titan celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the English dub. The event emanating from Javis Center in New York City featured Bryce Papenbrook and Trina Nishimura, the English-language voice actors for Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman, respectively.
Ahead of the release of Final Chapters: Special 2, Papenbrook and Nishimura revealed their experience in playing the Attack on Titan characters. Mikasa’s voice actor was heartbroken when she had to choose which person to save with the Titan serum while Papenbrook revealed that he had been a fan of AoT before he was selected for the role of Eren Yeager.
Another interesting fact revealed by Bryce Papenbrook was that he bit his hand in the voice-over booth to depict the scene of Eren Yeager biting his own hand to transform into a Titan. Similarly, he damaged his jaw to convey Eren’s pain. Papenbrook noted that it was “worth it for this show to go to those dark places” and he loved that he got “to play Eren so many different ways.”
Trina Nishimura Was Inspired By The Dedication Bryce Papenbrook Bought To Portraying Eren Yeager
Similar to Bryce Papenbrook, Trina Nishimura also worked in the English voice-over for Black Clover but the two didn’t get the opportunity to work together. The two voice actors played brief roles in the anime series, with Papenbrook voicing Liebe and Nishimura voicing Sally.
On the panel at New York Comic Con, Trina Nishimura revealed that she was a tad nervous about working with Bryce Papenbrook and meeting his expectations after knowing about the dedication he brought to his works. Regardless, that intensity inspired her performances. The safety and comfort brought by the team allowed her to seamlessly connect with the character.

Nishimura also took a few life lessons by portraying the role of Mikasa. Her determined nature while also possessing a soft heart that is able to empathize with the suffering of others made her a favorite of the voice actor.
Now that Eren Yeager has gone into a frenzy and wants to initiate the Rumbling, Mikasa has become the sole protagonist of the series. Attack on Titan Final Chapters: Special 2 will be released in Japan on November 5 and officially mark an end to Eren’s character arc in the anime.
