Baldur’s Gate 3 is undoubtedly one of the greatest video games of the year, garnering a huge amount of praise from both critics and players alike while also having some of the most nominations and awards compared to other titles released in 2023. In fact, Larian Studios’ role-playing game is a major contender for winning the Game of the Year award at arguably the biggest annual gaming event, The Game Awards.
However, although it has received universal acclaim from all across the globe, Baldur’s Gate 3 only got a digital release, which came as quite a disappointment to physical disc and media enthusiasts.
Fortunately, Larian Studios has listened to the fans and is now ensuring that everyone gets to experience the excellence of Baldur’s Gate 3 in their preferred medium, and let’s just say that maybe the developer and publisher overcompensated for the game’s digital-only release a bit too much.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Fans Wanted Discs? They Will Get Discs!
Larian Studios has officially announced the Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition, which comes with more than enough discs for gamers who adore their physical media. The studio obviously did not hold back when it comes to the disc count of the upcoming edition and went a few steps beyond, as each platform is getting its own variation in the number of included discs.
Aside from Baldur’s Gate 3 finally being able to play on a physical disc copy, the Deluxe Edition also includes various other bonus items that fans and collectors would most certainly appreciate.
Taking to X to share the anticipated news with the fans, Balder’s Gate 3 called the aforementioned items “physical feelies,” meaning that the Deluxe Edition will come with plenty of goodies that players will actually be able to touch and feel. The “feelies,” as Larian Studios so eloquently puts it, will include a CD collection of the game’s soundtrack, a world map of the RPG made of literal cloth, a stunning Mind Flayer poster, a couple of fabric patches, and a whopping 32 stickers.
In addition to that extensive list, Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition is also set to have a collectable box, which, according to Larian, has been “created in the style of the original series.”
Fans who purchase Balder’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition will also be blessed with all of the additional content that was included in the game’s initial Digital Deluxe Edition. Publishing Director Michael Douse, in a press release, called the upcoming edition an “experiment” and stated that this is what “the future of physical media” feels like to the Larian team.
According to Douse, the developer and publisher had been figuring out a way to consider Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition “the standard physical version going forward,” and if this proves to be a success, Larian “will keep doing it this way.”
Exactly How Many Discs Will Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition Have?
Continuing the press release about Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition, the director claimed that Larian Studios understands “the value of physical media” and that “it’s worth experimenting, even if it means” an abundance “of discs.” To put the number of discs into context, the PlayStation 5 will get two, while the Xbox Series X and S will get three.
However, that is not all because the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition also includes three additional CDs for the soundtrack, which makes five and six discs in total for the PS5 and Xbox, respectively.
Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition announcement also confirmed that the game will be completely “Playable-on-disc” on consoles. But the PC version comes with a twist, meaning that players will get a CD, which will only be used to run an installer and redeem a digital key to download the RPG from Steam.
Till now, Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition does not have an exact release date, but Larian has confirmed that it will be released for all platforms sometime in the first quarter of 2024.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition is now exclusively available for pre-order on the game’s official website and costs $79.99, which is just $10 more than the digital base version of the title. Considering all of the bonus goodies that are included with the upcoming deluxe edition, it feels like it will be worth the price.
