Few heroes hold the cultural prestige of Batman. The Dark Knight’s persona, pursuit of justice, and iconic silhouette have cemented him as a mainstay in all of fiction. Batman is mostly linked only to Bruce Wayne, the billionaire playboy who dons the cowl by night.
However, the mantle has been passed down in the comics and animations, most notably in the “Batman Beyond” series (1999-2001), which introduced Terry McGinnis as a new Batman in a futuristic Gotham. Fans have long clamored for a movie adaptation of “Batman Beyond,” and a new piece of fan art has ignited renewed excitement.
Concept Art Takes Batman Truly Beyond The Imagination
Yuhki Demers, who has worked in the SpiderVerse movies, recently took to X to reveal that he and writer Patrick Harpin had pitched a Batman Beyond Animated Feature to Warner Brothers five months ago. While the production loved their enthusiasm, they claimed “There is absolutely no way we can do a Beyond movie”.
The pitchers have, however, not let their guard down. They are working to pitch the movie all the way up to James Gunn, and in the meantime, took to X to share a taste of what they have been cooking.
The posters are truly a visual feast bringing the darkness of Gotham City into the aesthetics of the future. The original Batman Beyond show took place in 2019, which was still two decades away from its time. Thus, it is no surprise that a potential new movie will take place in the 2040s or 50s.
The cityscape of the poster certainly matches that of Blade Runner 2049, which is also set around the same time. The Caped Crusader is known for his use of technology and it will surely be a treat to see him wielding the gadgets of the future in the neon-drenched aesthetic of that era.
Why Denis Villeneuve Is The Perfect Director For Batman Beyond?
Unless Yuhki Demers and Patrick Harpin are going to direct the movie on their own, this practically screams for a director like Denis Villeneuve. The timeline and ambiance of this potential Batman Beyond match that of Villeneueve’s Blade Runner 2049.
Fresh off the success of Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve’s reputation as a sci-fi visionary is undeniable. Just like Christopher Nolan elevated Batman with his grounded, realistic approach, Villeneuve could bring a whole new dimension to the Dark Knight in this futuristic setting. In Dune and Blade Runner, Villeneuve has already proved that he knows how to show settings of the future, something the potential film will definitely need.
Though this film might not seem very likely at present, the superhero industry is known for its unexpected returns. Just as Marvel Studios revived the X-Men Animated Series, DC Comics could someday revisit its classics. The original TV series can be streamed on Max.
