Fans Mock Bill Skårsgard’s First Look as The Crow

The first installment of The Crow film series was released in 1994. The film starred Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, in the lead character of Eric Draven. Much like the 1994 movie, the 2024 reboot is going to follow Eric, a musician, who is resurrected after his and his fiancee’s murder to avenge their deaths.

Unfortunately, The Crow was Brandon Lee’s final film appearance as he was accidentally killed during its filming by a jammed prop gun. The movie, adapted from James O’Barr’s graphic novel, was a sleeper hit and gained a cult following. A reboot of the movie went into development in 2008, but it entered developmental hell as various directors, screenwriters, and actors were attached to it at different points.

In April 2022, it was announced that Bill Skarsgård would be playing the lead role, with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders directing it. Nearly two years later, Skarsgård’s first look as the resurrected Eric Draven is out, and fans are ridiculing it.

One of them drew a comparison posting on X that in 1996, wrestler Steve Borden/Sting adapted his look from The Crow, and now, The Crow is adapting his look from wrestler Samuel Ratsch/Darby Allin.

Fans were hoping to see a look that looked like a recreation of Brandon Lee’s character since the movie is a reboot. Hence, the skepticism towards Bill Skarsgård’s look as The Crow.

The Crow is indeed a reboot of the original 1994 movie. Even so, there are bound to be some elements that are not going to be the same as the ones in the three-decades-old movie as the creators of this one have a vision of their own for it.

Speaking of his inspiration for Bill Skarsgård’s look in the latter half of the film, Rupert Sanders told Vanity Fair that it is more inspired by his own life than James O’Barr’s graphic novel or Brandon Lee’s reincarnated look as The Crow. He said:

“I think the beauty of Bill is that he has a disturbing beauty, and as he transforms through his loss he becomes this thing that even he can’t control. It’s that famous line: ‘Whoever fights monsters must be careful that they don’t become one.’ That look was me in the ’90s when we were squat-raving in London, [mixed with some modern influences] like Post Malone and Lil Peep.”

Sanders also expressed his hope in the fact that 19-year-old people today look at it and claim that Skarsgård’s look resonates with them on a personal level.

The Crow is set to be released on June 7, 2024.
