Blue Eye Samurai Follows The Story of Mizu

Blue Eye Samurai is the story of Mizu, a mixed-race sword master who is seeking retribution from those who ostracised her in Japan during the Edo period. The show explored racism in Japan during the Middle Ages. Mizu had a rough upbringing because of her half-Japanese, half-white ancestry; the local villagers killed her mother and set fire to her home.

Because mixed-race people are viewed as less than human, Mizu was inspired to exact revenge on her father because of the terrible environment her ancestry created for herself. Mizu chooses to murder the four white men she knows were in Japan during the period she could have been born to get revenge on both her mother and herself.

Fan Theory Suggests Mizu’s Mother Was Someone Else

A user by the name of Ic-417 shared a theory on Tumblr regarding Mizu’s mother which supports the notion that maybe instead of her father, her mother was the foreign individual in the scenario. The theory suggests that as Fowler suggested that the woman Mizu thought was her mother was just a maid who was looking out for her, it raises the question as to who is Mizu’s mother and why couldn’t she raise her on her own.

Also, the series focused on the amount of white men in Japan at that time, but there was no emphasis on the number of women which could be a big reveal later in the series. These points suggest that maybe Mizu’s mother was a foreign individual and she was the reason why Mizu faced such a difficult childhood.
