Destiny 2 is confirmed for a crossover with the 80s cult classic show Ghostbusters. Taking to X to announce the collaboration, the official X handle to the game posted a simple message that said that the new event is going to be live on 19th March 2024. While some fans are rightly overjoyed at the announcement of new content in the game, the majority of the fans have been left utterly bemused at this sudden announcement. Even more so because usually anything ghost-related is given a preference during the time of Halloween, not March.
Although fans are not against the collaboration, there have been some conversations among them that suggest that they are looking forward to Bungie fixing the prevalent bugs and glitches and improving the game in general instead of peddling more content.
Ghostbusters To Turn up in Destiny 2
In a bid to bring back more players into their fold, Bungie has announced an ambitious crossover with Ghostbusters. People who had the privilege of growing up in the 80s will instantly remember the group of supernatural investigators in their grey overalls and plasma blasters.
With the legendary car and gun from Ghostbusters on display, the announcement was made with the idea of getting more people to play the game. However, veteran Destiny 2 players feel that this isn’t what the developers should be doing as they feel there are enough things to fix in the game as it is.
Questions were raised regarding the effectiveness of introducing more microtransactions in the game when the game in itself is riddled with flaws. The plague of cheaters in Destiny 2 resurfaced quite recently as Bungie handed a ban to Cruz, a top PvE player and 4-time World First Champ.
Some fans took to ridicule the idea of having a Ghostbusters crossover in March instead of sometime around Halloween saying, “I’ve heard of Christmas is July but never heard of Halloween in March…“. Other fans were seen saying that they needed armor suits and gun skins as one user posted, “Come on, give us some jumpsuit armor and maybe a skin for one of the trace rifles too!“
Fan Opinions Are Highly Divided
If Bungie wanted to propel themselves to safer grounds with this crossover, they have failed to do so. While some players are genuinely pleased regarding Ghostbusters coming to the game, most of them are not quite convinced.
One user commented regarding the decisions of the marketing team at Bungie when another user replied to it saying that Sony is just using Bungie as a platform to promote their upcoming movie, ‘
This theory does hold some ground as Sony is known to market their franchises quite aggressively, which will explain the sudden appearance of a Halloween-esque collaboration smack-dab in the middle of March.
What remains to be seen is whether the collaboration does anything beneficial for Destiny 2. The game has lost a considerable number of players and the cheating allegations are not helping at all. Along with these issues, Bungie now has the added responsibility of handling the Ghostbusters collaboration flawlessly, all the while promoting the upcoming movie.
Let us know in the comments what you think about this crossover. Do you think Sony is right in using Destiny 2 as a platform to promote Ghostbusters?
