The gaming community often play a huge role in terms of what changes the developers make or don’t make to their games. The developers interact directly with their fans through platforms such as Reddit, Discord and Twitter (now X) and get feedback. So it’s always a good sign when this feedback is actually implemented into games.

Call of Duty, one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world, releases a main game a year on average and fans have been quite upset about a missing feature over the last few years. Namely, this is the absence of the red dot on the minimap in multiplayer, which shows the player the location of enemy players.

What feature have Activision brought back to Call of Duty?

Those who’ve complained about the red dot being missing from the minimap in multiplayer can rejoice, because it’s back! In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the feature makes its long awaited comeback, which Activision have confirmed through its marketing campaign for the game.

The newer map style present in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and all subsequent releases in the Call of Duty franchise showed un – Ghosted players only through UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). That meant depending on killstreaks to know the enemy’s location. Now, though, the classic map has returned and fans will no doubt be pleased that Call of Duty has implemented this change.

Why were the reactions to the slow pacing of newer Call of Duty games negative?

Since the minimap didn’t show enemy player locations in the recent Call of Duty games, players were more cautious in gunfights, thus slowing down the pacing. This slow pacing was heavily criticized by players, as was the slower animation and weapons feeling tougher to maneuver.

All of this put together meant that Call of Duty, characterized by fast movement and crazy gunfire, didn’t feel like Call of Duty anymore. While slowing down a first person shooter (FPS) game isn’t necessarily a negative by itself, players did not ask for or expect that in Call of Duty.

Instead of the classic minimap, recent Call of Duty games featured the red dots on the compass on top of the screen. However, that only offered a vague direction of the enemy location, especially when compared to the minimap. This was a change which confused and angered many players. Hopefully, now that Activision have reverted to the classic minimap, the fast paced and more aggressive gameplay that Call of Duty is known for should return.
