Call of Duty is a franchise that has come under fire many times, and for various reasons, many of those have been valid, too. From the latest entry to the series, it feel like a DLC that was changed into a full-length title at the last moment to the multiplayer that has also been receiving flack because of its matchmaking. The series’ graph has seen a downward slope.
While fans admit this has been the case for the series, they agree that things could have been way worse for the title. Comparing the audience’s reception of the game to Rainbow Six Siege, a CoD fan made a point on X.
A Call of Duty Fan Seemingly Attacked Rainbow Six Siege While Defending the Game
The discussion was sparked on X, where most opinions in today’s world regarding gaming and every other topic in pop culture are shared. There was a tweet posted by the user “Funny Guy” Lewko (LewkoFTW), that talked about how the CoD franchise had a great fall, but things could have been much worse:
This may not be a fair comparison because Call of Duty has always made arcade-like first-person shooters, which differ from tactical first-person shooters like Rainbow Six Siege. One can understand the difference between the two titles by looking at what a match in both looks like. The pacing is different; the skill ceiling and skill gap are also incredibly contrasting.
All that is enough to conclude that in the first-person shooter genre, where new games are released now and then that rarely have something unique to offer, these two games are a lot more different than they are similar. The discussion had various Call of Duty and Rainbow Six Siege fans reacting differently.
The post was also followed by its author emphasizing that Siege’s downfall has been much more severe than the Call of Duty franchise’s and deserves to be studied because not many video games suffer this fate.
Fans Seem to Be Fed up With CoD
A user claimed to switch to Siege because they were fed up with CoD. They also stated that Siege was also making some balancing changes:
Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion of what they think is a better title among the two and which one they prefer. But the post author’s argument wasn’t compelling enough to make people believe that a game that was released almost a decade ago and is still able to retain close to 80,000 players daily is worse or even as bad as the current CoD.
Another comment also stated that the genres of the two titles are incredibly different. Also, Rainbow Six Siege is a single game that developers have supported since it launched in December 2015.
This is diametrically opposite to how Call of Duty likes to do things in the current scenario, as it has more or less become a yearly franchise now. There were even statements supporting Modern Warfare 2 (2022) for several years, but all went down the gutter when Activision announced Modern Warfare 3 (2023).
Another user made the point that even if what the original post author was saying was true, it wasn’t justified at all.
And this is a fair point because Modern Warfare 3, the series’ latest installment, got so many more things wrong than it got right. The drift from the franchise’s central themes was there for all Call of Duty fans to see. The series has certainly come a long way from a first-person shooter whose setting reminisced about some of the best Hollywood movies ever created to people running around in superhero costumes and rubber ducky skins wielding guns.
