First released in 1982, TRON achieved great success, becoming a cult classic and leading to a sequel, TRON: Legacy, in 2010. Now, after a whopping 15-year wait, fans are finally gearing up for the third installment in 2025. Cameron Monaghan’s recent update on the film during his visit to the Calgary Expo has sparked excitement among fans, suggesting that the wait will indeed be worth it for this promising watch. “I think this movie is going to really push forward what can be done, from a visual perspective. I would come to the set on days I wasn’t working just to see the amazing sets they were creating. I love the visual and technical aspects of film making.”
The first two TRON films already showcased groundbreaking visual effects. In the 1982 movie, live-action scenes were filmed in black-and-white on a black set and then hand-colored to create a futuristic look.
The glowing parts on costumes were meticulously painted by hand in each frame. Despite limited CGI usage, it was considered daring due to the technological constraints of the time. Filming kicked off for TRON: Ares in the early months of this year, with an impressive ensemble cast led by Jared Leto, who is going to play the titular character, Ares. Joining the Joker actor are the names Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson.
Steering the ship are original TRON writer-director Steven Lisberger as producer and Russell Allen serving as executive producer.
