The highly anticipated threequel, titled Tron: Ares, has been in development for years. Followed by several delays and uncertainties, the studio confirmed the movie nearly a decade later.

Joachim Rønning’s Tron 3 Officially Begins Filming

Following several delays and obstacles, Tron 3 has officially started filming. Originally scheduled to begin production in August 2023, the film encountered setbacks due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Its director Joachim Rønning has earlier shared that the filming will commence after the holiday period.

The director confirmed the production is officially underway in a recent Instagram post with an image showcasing the Tron 3 logo and a caption, stating, “WEEK 1 ON THE GRID.” The film is expected to be a direct sequel to the 2010 film Tron: Legacy and Rønning has suggested that the threequel is “about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human.”

Tron 3 is set to star Jared Leto in the titular role of Ares alongside the Primetime Emmy-winning actor Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Cameron Monaghan, and Jodie Turner-Smith. Leto’s casting in the movie has been the subject of concern for many. However, as the film officially starts production, fans have also shared their concerns about the involvement of Daft Punk, the composer for the Tron sequel, in the upcoming film.

Fans Want Daft Punk to Return to Tron 3

Famous for incorporating diverse musical styles in their DJ sets, the French electronic duo of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo made an indelible mark with their only film score for the 2010 film Tron: Legacy.

Featuring over 30 tracks, the score earned numerous acclaims, including a nomination for Best Score Soundtrack Album for Visual Media at the 54th Grammy Awards. They also released an extended version of their Tron: Legacy soundtrack with nine additional tracks on the tenth anniversary of the movie.

However, the iconic music duo is unlikely to return for the threequel as they announced their split in 2021 through a YouTube video, Epilogue. The anticipation for their return heightened when Tron 3 was announced by the studio.
