Charlie Cox is all set to reprise his role as Matt Murdock a.k.a Daredevil in the upcoming Disney Plus series Daredevil: Born Again. The show was initially supposed to have an eighteen-episode first season but a creative overhaul occurred after Marvel president Kevin Feige was reportedly disappointed with the initial footage of the series.
Now, the series has received different directors and showrunners, with filming set to resume in the coming days after a long break due to the WAG and SAG-AFTRA strikes and the creative overhaul. Moreover, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil: Born Again reportedly also owes a lot to the recent miniseries Echo, after Daredevil saw a bump in viewership after the premiere of the Alaqua Cox starrer.
Is Charlie Cox’s Daredevil In Echo?
Charlie Cox gained worldwide stardom when he starred in the acclaimed Marvel/Netflix series Daredevil. The show ran for three seasons on the streaming giant before being canceled due to unclear reasons. Cox’s run ended after three seasons, despite the series and other companion shows such as Jessica Jones, The Punisher, and Luke Cage also getting positive responses.
Due to its loyal fanbase, Kevin Feige mentioned that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil would return to the MCU in due time. He made his first appearance in a cameo in the film Spider-Man: No Way Home. He also had an extended cameo appearance in the Disney Plus series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. Characters from the Netflix show such as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk a.k.a Kingpin also made an appearance in the show Hawkeye.
Charlie Cox reprised his role as Daredevil in the recently released miniseries Echo, which starred Alaqua Cox in the lead role. While D’Onofrio had a larger role in the show, Charlie Cox appeared in a flashback sequence which indicated that Daredevil and Echo had a past when she used to work for Fisk. Executive producer Richie Palmer told io9,
“It was all thought out to make sure that fans of the Netflix series could still enjoy this series. We’re all fans of the Netflix series and all of the series that came about from that time, too. And we wanted to honor it and make sure that, you know, fans felt like that was a part of this story, but not in any way that you needed to know that stuff.”
The post-credits scene also seemed to set up Daredevil: Born Again as it is indicated that Wilson Fisk hopes to run for Mayor in the upcoming mayoral election in New York.
Alaqua Cox’s Echo Helped Fastrack Daredevil: Born Again?
Charlie Cox’s Disney Plus series Daredevil: Born Again has been under a dramatic turn of events since its production began. After being announced with an eighteen-episode first season, which was unprecedented in network history, production on the show halted due to WAG and SAG-AFTRA strikes, giving a long break to the crew and delaying the show.
The show then went through a creative overhaul, after Kevin Feige was disappointed with the initial footage of the series and wished to change the direction of the show. He let go of the head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman and replaced the directors as well. Dario Scarpdane of The Punisher was hired as showrunner and the directors of Moonknight were hired to helm the series.
Though other characters such as Foggy Nelson and Karen Page were not included in the show, they were re-written into the show after the overhaul, with original actors Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Hensen reprising their roles. Jon Bernthal, who played Frank Castle in the Netflix series and in The Punisher was also confirmed to return.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that filming for the series would restart in the coming weeks and that Marvel was developing more shows based on the Netflix characters. The Alaqua Cox starrer Echo also reportedly bumped views for Daredevil and The Punisher, pushing the studio to gauge renewed interest in the characters and series. Charlie Cox’s Daredevil might have a new beginning due to the release of Echo.
