Following the debut of Echo, the hype around Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio’s inevitable showdown as Daredevil and Kingpin in Daredevil: Born Again has only risen. The miniseries largely focused on Wilson Fisk / Kingpin’s relationship with Maya Lopez / Echo and ended on a note that marks the start of a new chapter for Kingpin.
Vincent D’Onofrio recently gave an interview where he discussed his character’s arc in Echo. During the interview, D’Onofrio dropped crucial clues that not only hint at future plans for Kingpin and Daredevil but also seemingly confirm the reboot show’s link with the Netflix era of the characters. Here is what D’Onofrio said about how the two iterations of the characters will connect in Daredevil: Born Again.
Vincent D’Onofrio Confirms Daredevil: Born Again Will Connect to the Previous Series
Vincent D’Onofrio reprises his role as Wilson Fisk / Kingpin in Marvel’s Echo, alongside Charlie Cox having a cameo as Mutt Murdock / Daredevil. The duo is set to take center stage in the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again. D’Onofrio recently sat down for a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, where he discussed his character’s MCU future.
During the interview, D’Onofrio was asked whether the version of Daredevil and Kingpin we have seen in the MCU, especially in Hawkeye and Echo, are the same as the Netflix iteration of the characters. In response, D’Onofrio stated the following, confirming the characters are the same:
“I think it is. During our restart of all the creative on Daredevil: Born Again, all the creatives got together and said, ‘Look, this is how we’ve got to do it now.’ So we are for sure only speaking about it in terms of being directly connected to the original Daredevil, and that’s a great thing.”
D’Onofrio’s statement confirms that the new series will be connected to the events of the original and will address the characters’ shared history. At the same time, the actor implied that the decision to connect the two shows about Daredevil was taken during the creative overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again.
Vincent D’Onofrio Teases Plans For Daredevil: Born Again
In the same interview, D’Onofrio talked about how the new series will carry forward elements from the original instead of being a complete reset. D’Onofrio stated that the history between Daredevil and Kingpin in the original series will serve as the ground for the new stories that will be explored in Daredevil: Born Again.
“It brings in a lot of cool stories and all the collateral story that happened in those original three seasons. So we now get to start this Born Again situation with all of that history behind us and the outcome of all that history.”
D’Onofrio’s statement seemingly confirms that Daredevil and Kingpin’s bitter enmity will continue after the events of the original show’s third season. The third season of Daredevil also left things unresolved for Wilson Bethel’s Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter. Fans have been clamoring to see Dex’s transformation into Bullseye, which is now a possibility thanks to Daredevil: Born Again‘s connection to the previous series.
Moreover, the universally acclaimed third season of the original series introduced several other elements such as the truth about Matt Murdock’s mother and his struggle with ideas of faith that added new dimensions to the titular superhero. Hence, fans will be excited at the possibility of seeing the continued character growth of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock / Daredevil.
Echo and Daredevil are streaming on Disney+, while the former is also available on Hulu.
