Charlie Cox’s Daredevil returns to his brutal roots in Echo after the embarrassingly comical portrayal of the character in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. This experimental depiction of Cox’s character, where Matt Murdock attempts both humor and action, threatens the standing of another character in the MCU. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was expected to be crowned the MCU’s most versatile hero, just like his comic book counterpart.
It is believed that Marvel might continue this versatile phase of Matt Murdock in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series. However, fans are calling for the series to tone down his goofy side, which many found painful to watch after having become fans of the Netflix version of the character.
Echo Sets Up Daredevil In A Position To Dethrone Tom Holland’s Spider-Man
Fans would very much like to forget some of the cringe-worthy Daredevil moments from the poorly received She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. They had almost given up, feeling that Marvel had ruined the exceptional character from the three-season run of the eponymous Netflix show. However, the first episode of Echo brought back the darker, bone-breaking version of the blind lawyer, delighting fans.
One cannot deny the fact that She-Hulk opened up the possibility of showing Matt Murdock in a lighter context when he is not engaged in crime fighting or grappling with internal struggles. The Netflix projects were recently added to the MCU timeline on Disney+, making it canon. When one piece together a timeline of the character in the MCU, including those projects, it appears that Daredevil has checked all points of versatility — dark, grounded, relatable, and even comical.
Charlie Cox’s character can fight and shut down crimes in Hell’s Kitchen. He can then step into the role of an attorney for the downtrodden (and The Punisher… and Peter Parker) whenever they need him. Additionally, he could be the lady’s man and do the ‘stride of pride’ after getting cozy with Jennifer Walter. Finally, he’s back again fighting one of the most brutal anti-heroes in Marvel in the Echo series.
While the creators experiment with Matt Murdock in the MCU, it may draw attention away from one of the other versatile and relatable characters of the MCU, Spider-Man. It was not long ago that Kevin Feige stated that Spider-Man and Daredevil would help expand Marvel’s “street-level” superheroes (via MTV News). Daredevil may also appear in the next Spider-Man film, with this mission in mind for the filmmakers.
Tom Holland Could Rarely Become The Friendly, Neighborhood Spider-Man In The MCU
Stan Lee’s Spider-Man was a game-changer in the comic book industry, making his Marvel debut in the 1960s. The character was one of the few who was fully developed at the time of its inception. Most other characters, including Daredevil, took some time before becoming the iconic figures they are today. Stan Lee added all the common teenager problems in developing Peter Parker’s arc, making him the every man’s superhero.
The “friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man” became a defining identity for the character, even though he got involved in larger-than-world problems in the comics. However, when the character was introduced in the MCU, fans saw very little of this aspect of the character. Peter Parker, for the most part, was entangled in world-saving problems and fighting alongside the Avengers. After Tony Stark’s sacrifice, there was a clear attempt to make him the central MCU character, which would have succeeded if not for the risky Sony deal.
If everything falls into place at Marvel, Tom Holland will play a more significant role in the upcoming Avengers movies. Meanwhile, Daredevil will take on a more prominent role on the street side of things, and he might even replace Spider-Man as the friendly, neighborhood Daredevil if Marvel decides to continue with his goofier side.
Fans can enjoy the latest antics of Daredevil by streaming the shows, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo, on Disney+.
