Many actors often make headlines for keeping props from the set of movies or shows (usually after filming is wrapped) to keep as memorabilia. Charlie Hunnam, star of Sons of Anarchy and Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, is among those who confessed to following such a tradition. But he may have gone a tad bit overboard with his pursuit. Hunnam apparently “stole everything” from his uber-popular FX crime drama series, especially from the costume department!
Of course, one cannot blame him for doing so.
After an astonishing seven-season run on the motorcycle drama, he can be let off the hook. In the textured fabric of TV history, his portrayal of antihero Jax Teller became a distinct element. It is a depiction intrinsic to the 43-year-old’s career. As he detailed the keepsakes he snagged for himself in an interview, he aptly summarized, “It’s more mine than theirs at this point.”
Besides, the actor had a noble reason for taking those props. He asserted having a sentimental association with whatever he grabbed from the Sons of Anarchy set. Of course, there was also the part where he (lightheartedly) said it could be used as his ‘retirement fund,’ but we can brush over that for now!
Charlie Hunnam Admits Stealing “Everything” From Sons of Anarchy Set, Including His Bike
While talking about his Rebel Moon stint in an interview with Heatworld, Charlie Hunnam was asked to reveal the ‘biggest thing’ he has ever stolen from the sets of the various projects he has done so far.
In the most hilariously candid manner, the actor confessed to his antics, “I stole everything from Sons of Anarchy.” This apparently includes the motorbike he rode in the series as Jax Teller. He was often spotted with his 2003 Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide Sport throughout his tenure on the show, so one can presume that’s what he kept with him.
It didn’t stop there, though. Charlie Hunnam’s primary target seemed to be Sons of Anarchy‘s costume department as he admitted to stealing the rings he donned as the character, his iconic vest jacket—the whole attire! Here’s what he said on the matter:
“I stole my motorbike. I stole the coat, you know, the leather jacket. My rings. The whole costume. Like, literally everything that wasn’t nailed down. ‘Cause after doing that show for seven years, I thought it’s more mine than theirs at this point. So, is it really stealing?”
This isn’t the first time Hunnam has acknowledged taking those items from the Kurt Sutter-created FX crime drama. Previously, in a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, the King Arthur: Legend of the Sword star revealed that the bike he swiped is in his garage, getting no use whatsoever.
Charlie Hunnam Is Sentimental About The Props He Stole From Sons of Anarchy
When the interviewer asked what the team behind the series would do with the costumes/props anyway, Charlie Hunnam replied, “What they were going to do with it was sell it off [for] giant profit.”
This raised the question of whether or not the 43-year-old celebrity planned to do the same. To this, the Pacific Rim alum said, “No. I kept it all.” He revealed that he doesn’t intend to sell any of the Sons of Anarchy keepsakes currently, attributing it to his sentimentality. But if ever need be, they could be used as his ‘rainy day fund,’ joked the star.
“I’m a little sentimental. And also, thankfully, things have been going okay for now. So, that’s like my rainy day fund. That’s the retirement fund.”
It must be noted that the word ‘stolen’ used by celebrities when describing items they’ve taken from a set is presumably more often than not a hyperbole. Actors aren’t always permitted to take props or costumes from a set. They might, however, be allowed to keep some things as gifts. After all, it’s a token of the work they’ve done and the experiences they’ve had.
The opposite could also be true, though. It’s a tradition going hand-in-hand with emotional attachment to set pieces. So, for many talents, although it could be frowned upon, pocketing a thing or two (usually) doesn’t hold any actual consequences!
Of course, there have also been instances where actors were asked to return whatever they kept a hold on after the studio demanded it. Take Rupert Grint, for example. The Harry Potter alum reportedly swiped a ‘golden dragon egg’ from the fourth film in the series (via BBC). Alas, his attempts weren’t successful. It was tracked down and ultimately taken away.
Charlie Hunnam’s attempts seemingly didn’t meet such a fate. He is happy with the memorabilia he has collected and intends to keep them close to his heart. Until, of course, he needs them for his retirement fund!
Sons of Anarchy (2008-14) is available for streaming on Hulu or Amazon Prime Video.
