Even Nolan agreed in his latest interview that his casting as Iron Man in the franchise was “the most consequential casting” in the history of Hollywood. Downey Jr’s work as Lewis Strauss in Nolan’s 2023 flick was exactly what the director wanted. His exceptional performance also earned him an Academy Award nomination.

During his latest appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, director Christopher Nolan praised actor Robert Downey Jr and explained how his casting as Iron Man/Tony Stark in the MCU was so important,
“I’ve always wanted to work with him. I’ve always seen that in his work. And he has such charisma as Tony Stark. Him playing Iron Man is one of the most consequential casting decisions that’s ever been made in the history of the movie business. I wanted to give him the opportunity to lose himself in a part, lose himself in another human being the way great actors love him.”
Downey Jr was exposed to the world of Hollywood ever since he opened his eyes as he is the son of the late Robert Downey Sr. Despite this, the actor faced several setbacks in the 1990s. After several years of substance abuse, arrests, rehab, and relapse, the actor made a comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor’s journey came to an end in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame but now sources claim that the actor might make a comeback, along with Scarlett Johansson.
Christopher Nolan says Robert Downey Jr has “generosity of spirit“
Further in the interview, Nolan explained how Downey Jr influences everyone behind the scenes, revealing that he has an incredible “generosity of spirit,”
“He has this incredible generosity of spirit. It means when he’s in a scene with other people he’s making sure they are all doing their best, that they are all able to bring their best to the table. He’s helping them clarify those emotional connections.”
With his incredible talent, Downey Jr has managed to bag several prestigious awards and nominations. Oppenheimer, which managed to gross over $959 million at the global box office, has been nominated in 13 categories at the upcoming Academy Awards.
