Be it the Captain Marvel sequel or Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw disappointment with these two films even after much hype. The Marvels opened on Nov. 10 last year with $46 million domestically to experience the worst debut in the MCU. Disney CEO Bob Iger admitted that Disney has made “too many” sequels.
Talking about Ant-Man 3, it was a box-office disappointment for various reasons. The movie ended its theatrical run with a box office haul of around $473 million worldwide, which is considered definitely low given the stature of MCU. The film was the biggest MCU second-weekend drop.
And, all these things led Marvel Studios to think about these film’s future, which is looking dim at the moment.
Marvel Studios’ Future Approach to Less Guaranteed Films
Brie Larson’s The Marvels, the sequel to her 2019 blockbuster from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel received hate and backlash from MCU fans from all around the world. It became one of the biggest flops in the franchise to date. The film has grossed only $199 million (Per The Numbers) globally compared to its $274.8 million production budget. This box office bombing made Marvel rethink greenlighting a third film in the series.
Disney CEO Robert Iger has addressed The Marvels flopping at the box office. “The Marvels was shot during COVID,” Iger said during a panel at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit, reported by CNBC. “There wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.“
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the third film in the Ant-Man trilogy and the 31st in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also could not get rid of the failure, at least per MCU standard. Though the movie, which premiered on February 17th, 2023, earned an impressive $46 million on its debut at the domestic box, it could not take that opening into a box office juggernaut.
All these failures gave Marvel Studios food for thought. For whatever reason, it started losing its essence among fans and that’s why, as per a report by industry insider Daniel Richtman, Marvel Studios is less enthusiastic to go with Captain Marvel 3 or Ant-Man 4 kind of movies which are seemingly not a guaranteed hit. Brie Larson about Her Future with The Marvels 2
The Marvels starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris was a huge disappointment at the box office. It was supposed to be the embodiment of feminine power but ended up getting panned by critics as well as by fans.
Thus, the desire to develop another Captain Marvel film with Larson was recently dashed to the ground. While appearing at the SAG Awards, Larson was asked by Extra about her future for Captain Marvel.
“I don’t have anything to say about that,” she quickly replied.
In 2024, Marvel movie Deadpool 3 is considered a certain hit. Then, with The Fantastic Four and Captain America: New World Order, the studio is slated for big hits. And, thus, as to when we will see Captain Marvel again, we will have to wait and watch.
