There comes a time when things just seem to go wrong one after the other no matter how hard one tries. And it seems that time is upon Disney for now after repeatedly facing multiple box office failures. From the Star Wars franchise to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from a distance, it looks like everything that could go wrong is going wrong for the billion-dollar studio.
Even its animated or live-action features have been underperforming, leading fans to declare that the billion-dollar company has just lost its touch. And in an attempt to climb back up on the ladder of success, as per a recent rumor, the studio is reportedly trying to win back the good graces of Johnny Depp and restarting his Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Disney Reportedly Trying to Get Johnny Depp Back After Facing Multiple Failures
Disney’s box office records lately have not been looking good. Whether it is its Marvel franchise or animated flicks, the results have been no less than a disaster. Even fans have been going about stating how the quality of its projects has diminished over the years and that Disney has run out of creativity trying to brand itself as woke (see Reddit).
While there are numerous reasons, as per scooper Daniel Richtman, the studio is reportedly trying to get Johnny Depp back after firing him amid his legal troubles with ex-wife, Amber Heard. Seeing how Depp has emerged victorious following the lawsuit and has an incredible and still intact huge fan base, the studio is trying to rehire him for his $4.5 billion Pirates of the Caribbean franchise (via The Numbers).
Even back in December 2022, the franchise’s producer, Jerry Bruckheimer had stated to AP Entertainment that there are plans in place to potentially bring back Depp in a future installment of the franchise. However, since then there hasn’t been any further update other than the revelation that Pirates 6 and a spin-off movie are being developed and that it would be hard to have Depp back on board (see The Hollywood Reporter).
Will Johnny Depp Say Yes To Another Pirates of the Caribbean Movie?
Disney’s recent failures like The Marvels and Ant-Man 3 are a testament to the fact that the audience has been getting the superhero fatigue bug. In such a scenario when the studio is facing disastrous box office results and when an unnamed Disney executive held the audience’s dislike for female-led movies to Puck News (via The Direct), reverting to a franchise like Pirates of the Caribbean seems to be a sensible option.
However, a Pirates movie without Johnny Depp is another recipe for disaster, whose portrayal of Jack Sparrow is hailed as the major reason why the franchise is so famous today. And if the rumors of Disney approaching Depp are true, the question remains will the actor accept the studio’s demand after it dropped him during some of his weakest days? As per the Daily Mail in June 2023, it was reported that Depp had no plans to return to Disney.
Yet a source close to the actor in July revealed to People that the actor might be willing to consider and even come back in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Even though these are speculations, it would certainly do Disney a lot more good if Depp returns in a potential sixth installment for the majority of fans would not want another movie without the actor (see Reddit).
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise can be streamed on Disney+.
