God of War is confirmed not to be part of the lineup in Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest for this year. Members of the gaming community were optimistic to see the franchise make a return unfortunately, the man behind the games has spoken and players should move on.
Keighley released a full list of games that were confirmed not to be part of the show, which gave the fans a glimmer of hope only to be snuffed out by director Cory Barlog. Although PlayStation will be participating in the event, there is a low likelihood of any major first-party titles.
Summer Game Fest Will Not Feature God of War
The iconic PlayStation franchise won’t be part of the show, despite the PC port for God of War Ragnarök being revealed during the State of Play. Additional announcements in a different event would have been good, but Barlog himself crushed those hopes.

The director’s brief answer was a knife to the heart but it can be taken as a positive development. Cory Barlog is actively working on a secret project with Santa Monica Studios which could potentially be a new IP or a spinoff of the iconic God of War franchise. Either way, Barlog has some pull from within and his answer should be to convince the fans to temper expectations.
Perhaps it is too early to share details, which is why the director is keeping the insider knowledge close to his chest. The gaming community should exercise patience, reflect on previous games by the studio and expect the same level of quality for future projects.
It Is Too Soon to Share Any More News Related to God of War
Although Barlog did not direct the last major installment, he still played an active and major role as a producer. The franchise holds a special place in the heart of the director, who recently reminisced about the feelings that went through him during the Sony presentation of E3 2016, where he had to play the live demo with a live audience and an orchestra on top of that.
The director also casually shared a cryptic image that could have something to do with the secret project. Regardless, Barlog’s optimism and enthusiasm should be more than enough to put the minds of fans at ease.
Sony has chosen to remain quite secretive about the future of the franchise, despite its popularity. The conclusion of the previous game suggested that there were more stories to tell that could branch into a spinoff series, and this notion was further reinforced by the brief Valhalla DLC.
Perhaps it is a good thing for the franchise to be omitted; it will give other games and new IPs the spotlight without being overshadowed by a major franchise. Sony knows how much the franchise means to the fans and plans to do right by them.
