Dakota Johnson and Henry Cavill’s big box office releases of 2024 were major misses at the theaters. Despite its ensemble cast, Cavill’s film with Matthew Vaughn, Argylle, bombed at the box office. Dakota Johnson, on the other hand, tried her hands at the superhero genre with Madame Web but failed miserably and her film gained the new title of ‘worst comic book movie of all time’. Despite potentially losing millions for the studios, these films are currently among the top 5 movies of 2024.

2024 hasn’t been a great year for films so far. When the X account, @HollywoodHandle, compiled the list of the top 5 box office performers of 2024, some subpar films also made it to the list. Dakota Johnson‘s Madame Web and Henry Cavill‘s Argylle surprisingly made it to the list, despite being panned by critics and audience.

Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web was released on Valentine’s Day and marked the lowest opening for an SSU movie from Sony. The film made on a budget of $80 million has only managed to gross $51.5 worldwide after its 6-day theatrical run. According to Variety, the film about a paramedic with psychic abilities opened in second place to Bob Marley: One Love in North America, with $17.6 million. The film collected $25.8 million from the North American market and $25.7 million from the international market.

The numbers clearly indicate that the film is heading for a disaster, after performing worse than the previous SSU disaster, Morbius, which opened with $39.1 million. The film suffered from an underwhelming plot, thinly written characters, and wooden performances. Madame Web is the latest superhero film that failed to impress audiences, the previous ones being The Marvels, The Flash, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Apple’s $200 million spy thriller, Argylle, has become one of the biggest disasters of 2024 but still managed to become the 4th highest-grossing film of the year so far. The Henry Cavill-led film only grossed $37.2 million at the North American box office and $77 million in total. In its third week in theaters, Matthew Vaughn‘s film collected $5.55 million, clearly struggling to recoup its production budget.

The film was largely criticized for its convoluted plot and a long 139-mins runtime. Many critics considered the silly plot of the film as a parody of the genre but executed badly. While the cast received praise from critics for their performances, fans hated Henry Cavill’s appearance in the film.

After the box office disaster of Expend4bles, Jason Statham‘s latest film, The Beekeeper, was a massive success at the box office, earning $143.8 million (via Box Office Mojo). The film’s low budget of $40 million and mixed to positive critical reviews also contributed to its box office success. The film received a favorable Tomatometer score of 70% and Statham, as usual, killed it in his role as a former “Beekeeper” operative, Adam Clay.

Mean Girls was another low-budget high-returns movie of the year. The film made on a budget of $36 million grossed $101.7 million at the box office, with solid performances from Reneé Rapp and Angourie Rice (via Box Office Mojo). The film’s success mainly relied on the cult status of the 2004 film of the same name. Rachel McAdams and Lindsay Lohan starred in the original film.

Bob Marley: One Love was released last week along with Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web and emerged as the clear winner among the two. It garnered $51 million at the domestic box office and $29 million at the global box office (via Variety). Kingsley Ben-Adir plays the role of the singer and songwriter Bob Marley.
